What's up with the WRANGLER?

What's up with the WRANGLER?
I think this is a good discussion, but a bit dangerous as it's a bit of a religious discussion in some respects.

For me, it's a Jeep thing regardless of whether or not it was Willys, or AMC or Chrysler, etc. I think we get stuck sometimes on who "owns" what with regard to companies and so forth. I think a Harley Davidson Sportster is what it is, regardless of whether it's a 2014 model or one built during the AMF years or one built prior to the AMF years. I don't think Sportster owners distinguish them. I'm pretty sure the TJ's were Jeeps technically built by both Chrysler and Daimler-Chrysler and I doubt they argue between them.

If you don't like Jeep being owned by Chrysler, or Daimler, or Fiat then that's your choice. But if you limit your scope to the fact that it is simply a Jeep, and not get wrapped around the axle of corporate ownership then it's a much easier pill to swallow.

Now when it gets to models, for me that's entirely different. I love CJ's for the same reasons we all do. I don't care for YJ's simply because they have square headlights. There's been PLENTY of days I considered a YJ and put a CJ clip on it...:bang:

I guess I just see they YJ's, TJ's and so on as a natural progression of the model. I also understand why other's do not.

See I guess that's where my confusion comes from. I don't rely on just my opinion to be something set in stone. They are like aholes, everybody's got one and are entitled to it. But this isn't something set by opinion when there are indisputable historic facts that exist. So despite what some would like it to be or have always mistakenly thought it was, one cannot be objective and ignore factual documented history.
I see so many times in these types of discussions where folks state their own thoughts but ignore the reality of days gone by, by failing to square it with facts and logic.
The history of "the Jeep" is what it is, and it can't be molded to ones own liking. So I can't see why so many are willing to do that and ignore reality.

Yes, and I do see where it can be a "bit dangerous" similar to discussing religion. But please don't anyone take my written text and add negative emotion to it on a personal level.

This made me smile:

I was watching Pawn Stars last night (recorded) and the boss is looking for a vehicle for his daughter. But also looked at a Jeep, it was one of the Wranglers, the used car guy was laying it on thick and Harrison wasn't buying it. Then the used car says this is the tried and true jeep that fought in wars. I was about to jump up and say, "No it wasn't." But god bless his little heart, Harrison jumped first and sayed, "No it isn't." The used car guy backed off and said, "Your right it isn't." Made me smile.....

So what your sayin Pa is that you will be going to Jeep heaven where everyone will be driving pre 1986 jeep vehicles and the rest who don't believe the way you do will be going to Jeep hell where there will be no cjs(just slamed JKs playing vanilla ice).

I mean this in fun - passion for what you believe in is good - I just need to make sure I am passionate about what matters most in life and there after.:chug:

I guess the basic confusion for some comes from there being a vehicle named the Jeep and a company named Jeep, and they can't differentiate the two. There was a vehicle named the "Jeep" way before there was a company named "Jeep". As in a Willys Jeep (not to be confused with a Willys truck), or a Kaiser Jeep. Nobody referred to them as the company, ie: "hey, nice Kaiser your driving" just like today nobody says "hey, nice Dodge your driving". Most refer to the particular model. So why do some want to make an exception for the Jeep brand and refer to any of their models as the brand name?

Yes your correct. I have a passion for the Jeep and it's rich history and it's something I don't want people to forget, as many already have. I don't make this stuff up.... I just pass it on. As the slogan goes "Jeep... there is only one"!

Interesting to listen to everyone...I've owned several iterations of Jeep (CJ5 , CJ7 , YJ, TJ, just not a true Willy's). Enjoyed each one. My current ride was scratch-built from a bare frame...$50 off of Ebay. Used to be a '91 Wrangler. Had the advantage of assembling it with whatever I wanted ('cause I had nothing except the frame) so I grabbed up, traded, fabbed, or bought the best pieces from each model that would turn it into what I wanted it for...In the best Jeep tradition, I built it...I wave and get waved back...seems good enough to me :D

I know the feeling, sorta. I have an '83 CJ7 frame and front fenders/hood, and Tailgate, a '95 YJ body, and TJ seats. People think it's a CJ.

Thats a good way to put it. I thank everyone for keeping on track and not name calling or anything. I like that every once in awhile a little humor is injected in as well. This thread is being watched closely. Every post made sends an electric shock to either my bed or computer chair.

Vicki wants to thank Hedgehog for his post on 6/3 at 1:02 A.M. that resulted in a charge being sent directly to my bed. She muttered something about " the best sex she ever had" while I woke up convulsing with the dog turning the hose on me? Strange huh? :D

As long as this stays civil this thread will reach 1 Million pages or we'll run out of bandwidth... ;)

I don't see it as a religion as much as a cult.

I agree. It's been pretty good. Most of these type discussions go downhill, never to return.
Again to reiterate, don't anyone take my comments personally as I'm speaking in generalities when I say "folks" or "people" or "younger generation".
:chug:

ps. Jeeps (the vehicle) are my favorite cult.:notworthy:

Hey now, I've been good lately, at least I thought I was being good. I don't find a post I made on 6/3 at 1:02 A.M. Was it scrubbed or are we talking about my "Hump in the door" post. Reagan did look authentic in his old CJ6 now didn't he, but I will admit that he looked as good driving up in the Scrambler too.

There is no question that I much prefer a Jeep that is technologically closer to an old grey Ford farm tractor than to anything we drive today. Electronic ignition is about the only place I waiver on the issue ..... Hmmm then there's fuel injection, I like that too.

Vicky, glad to help out in any way I can. If what I post helps your personal life I've got a million .... well a bunch .... of posts still in me that could help a whole lot..... :)

I have found that on ocation when I post at 1:00 am I sometimes forget to hit the submit reply button.:D

Speaking of wranglers I am possibily getting a 97 for 400 bucks.

Same here, but Peter wrote that I posted then, I've got late post on 6/2 and one in the day on 6/3, but nothing at 1:02 am, at least not one that's still there. No complaint if it was scrubbed though.

That's E.S.T. Time so your 10:02 pm. Was just looking for a post at note so I could use the bed joke. Relax :D

Why? And will you resell it? edit..... Sorry. Was thinking Yj

One of the soldiers has a wrangler that he said is shot and that he was going to scrap it. He started listing the problems and all sounded like :dung: I can fix. So I offered 400 bucks. You want to help me get a trailer and out to Pittsburgh?

This is a good example of how I differentiate the new wranglers. I think they are very much jeeps but people buy them who don't know how to or don't care about the jeep heritage and they think the vehicle is junk when minor maintenance issues start to compile . Most cjers pull out the welder and wrenches and fix the problems. The wrangler owners that do the same are ok in my book
