I just bought a 80 CJ5 with a four speed. The guy I bought it from said itll occasional get stuck in a gear when going to reverse and sure enough after a few hours of running around it got stuck in what I believe is second. He mention it was a simple temporary fix to "pop out the shift arm and line 'em back up". Now I kinda know what he was talking about, take the shift arm out and line the gates back up, but I have no idea how to do that or where to start. Any one have a good video or step by step? All info/advice would be much appreciated. I believe its a T-176 .

Thanks

Never dug into a 4 speed, only the 3 speeds, but hopefully the process is close to being the same. Short description is; you remove the rubber boot so you have access to the collar that screw on the top of the Transmission . Unscrew the collar. The 3 speeds have a dowel type pin that needs to be taken out of the side of the "ball" (it's retained by the collar you just unscrewed). Don't drop the pin in the Transmission !

Once you've gotten that far, pull the shift lever out the top, line everything up and installation is a reversal of the removal.

Thing is, there's an issue causing it to routinely get stuck in a gear. Something is worn out, bent or broken (or loose). Just stickin' it back in and going might be a temporary fix but if you keep doing that your luck will eventually run out and you'll end up with a broken part inside the tranny.

Evaluate everything you can see when you get the shifter out and see if you can figure out what needs to be replaced, welded (built up) or straightened.

Good luck! What part of Alabama are you located? I'm in mid Georgia but only 3 miles from the AL line.

I am guessing a T-176 ??

for the parts description use Morris 4x4 list.

Tremec T176 & T177 Transmission Parts at Morris4x4

push down and turn counter clockwise on part #32 and the stick will come out. Look down inside and you will see where the rods are not lining up. Use a long screw driver or even the stick to line them back up and you will be in neutral. I think the problem in the lolly pop on th end or the stick is worn. the stick should be replaced. to re assemble just put the end of the stick back in the slot and push down and turn the housing cap and your back in business. I would order the #34 and #36.:D

Oh, and welcome to the site. Best bunch of Jeep guys I've every had the privilege to depend on for info.

Common problem for the T-176 /t177. The two pins in the top cover that hold the cap down backed out on mine. A new seal boot and a large hose clamp around the bottom of the boot that covers the pins has eliminated the problem for me.
