1985 Jeep CJ-7 (258, Dana 300 Transfer Case, 3 Speed Auto Transmission.)
Hey everybody! I've decided to finish restoring the 1985 Jeep CJ7 that I started on, a couple of years ago but then life happened ;).

I've pulled out the engine to start stripping it down of all the accessories so I can order a rebuilt one from Autozone. The guy I bought the Jeep from said that the engine was "original" "professionally rebuilt." And Frankenstein must have been the professional . After I pulled off the (metal) valve cover I noticed the head had 2 center studs that were cut off, so I goggled the numbers I got off the head and it turned out to be a 1975 jeep head.

I then ran the numbers on the block and it turns out to be a 1981 block with a 1979 intake manifold and a 1989 carburetor.

Well all that aside, I got on autozone's website and looked at this engine: Surefire/Engine (DA26) | 1985 Jeep CJ7 6 Cylinders C 4.2L 2BL | AutoZone.com

It says the valve cover has 5 bolts on it, but all the 1985 Jeep valve covers I've found have had 6 bolts on it, could this just be a misprint?

Another question I've had is what color did the engines come in when they were new?

Thanks!

The two I have are a '83 & '84 and they don't have bolts around the bottem of the valve cover just two on the top.

I have a 85 CJ7 and another AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l from a 85. Both have the plastic valve cover with the 2 studs from inside holding them in place. Ive never heard of an early head with the stud mounted valve cover. It sounds to me like an '80s head that was drilled and tapped for the metal valve cover.

The 83 I had actually has 4 bolts in the cover. one right in the front, one right in the rear and the 2 studs on top. The rear is a SOB to get out.
