Tim seems like you and I are doing the same build. Except you are a little further along than I am and have a lot more experience than me. This is my first attempt at something this extreme. I have to admit I'm excited to do it, but also nervous that I am going to something wrong and mess it all up. Wish you lived closer so I could come over or you could come here.

Not much progress but I took advantage of the first sunny and DRY day to get as much rust removed as possible and added a coat of "rusty metal" primer to the frame. I still have some welding to do but this will at least protect the bare metal as I work around the weather.

The weather is downright arctic in north Alabama but good news - my OME YJ conversion kit should be delivered Saturday. It will be above freezing Sunday afternoon, maybe I can prep the frame for the new spring hangers.

The weather is the same here frigid, and my garage isn't heated, so work has been at a standstill. I have parts coming in Friday. New fuel tank, new fuel tank skid plate and straps, and the sending unit. I can't install anything until I can put on my rust encapsulater and I think it has to be at least 45 to even paint it on.

Well, things have been slow but moving.

Last weekend, we had some beautiful weather before the tornado watch and I got the last of the major frame repair done - cancer removed along the frame rails used Saf-T-Cap frame stiffeners, from the gas tank cross member back) and the rear cross member welded in. Patched another hole under a shock mount. This weekend I'll be working on body mounts. I have one that needs complete a complete rebuild and a few others that need patches similar to your grill support. My body mounts came in this week so I can check the hole sizes. Should have 2 days in the 80's, with luck I can finish all the welding and get a first coat of paint by Sunday afternoon. My Old Man Emu springs showed up too (first package was just the hardware).



I spent a couple weeks trying to clean up my rusted Transmission just to remember the guy I picked up the jeep from had thrown in a 2nd one with TC and bell housing. The bell is cracked but both the trans and TC are rust free on the inside. So, woohoo! I haven't gotten back to that rebuild but it will be much easier now.

My front axle has come to a minor standstill - I need a case spreader to get the carrier back in but first I think I need to add some shims to the pinion - it has way too much drag.

Welding is done. 1st coat of paint drying.

Front axle - is ready to go back under the frame! It still needs brake hardware and I need to torque the axle nuts and pinion nut but I'm liking the look with those tires!


2nd coat of paint went on the frame, I should be able to get that axle on the springs and mounted next week if the weather cooperates.

I opened up the rear axle. Looks like someone lost the ring gear at some point. No damage or much wear at all on the ring or pinion so I'm guessing it was rebuilt not too long before it was parked. I think I'll replace the seals and cover (it was leaking like a sieve) and wait for the full rebuild until I decide on a locker. I am replacing the axle shafts with a one-piece upgrade so those will get assembled and I'll be back with a rolling chassis before too long.

Or are those front Shackles wrong? Or are the front springs too short? They are not going to Swing correctly the way it looks....

I hope they aren't wrong! I did a YJ spring conversion and those are the new shackle hangers from Rocky Road with Old Man Emu springs.
