- 1978 CJ7 304, Th400, Quadra trac converted to part time and low range
1978 CJ7 , AMC 304 , QuadraTrac /GM Turbo 400 . The QuadraTrac has the milemarker 2wd conversion. I've posted the saga of a chain change on this, and here is the summary:
Changed the chain, sealed it up, noticed movement (in out in output shaft).
Figured out that although I torqued the rear yoke, it was not all of the way tight in its bearing, and was sliding in and out. Tightened that.
Found metal in the ATF of the QuadraTrac . Drained, split case found signs of wear on the power side of the sun gear, attributed to not inserting sun gears evenly on install.
Reassembled, everything turns smoothly, and then noticed this:
With low range in Neutral (center position) Transfer Case turns with almost no resistance, chain seems to run smoothly, no binding, no noises, seems to move perfectly.
Engaged in high range, there is a bit of resistance and a slight squeal when turning in the forward direction. Squealing seems to come from low range unit. Not loud, not metal on metal sound, just a slight squeak. Not hard to turn but can feel resistance. When turning in reverse, quite a bit of resistance.
I happened to pick up a spare QuadraTrac . Should I change out the low range or is this normal?
