Build Thread Aussie CJ7 - 78
Captains Log ... Star Date 469.

Roll bar is on hold as I need more steel so this weekends job was to finish the rock sliders - Zipped up and primed.

Got one tacked up and should be looking good for actually finishing that job tomorrow.
I'll try to take a couple more photos to give you a better idea of the mounting.

My brother should be folding up the dash this week so I'll have to try hard to leave that aside until I'm ready for it ..

We need more steel captain!!! (he says with a Gaillic accent) Them rockers looking nice....add a set of those to the box you are preparing for me....better make it a crate. :D Looks like you finally got some rain to cool things down too...nice.

I didnt know they had Star Trek in Australlia? Must be one of those episodes when theres an alternate Universe. I remember them being the opposite ( evil vs. good ) but dont remember the whole episode being upside down.

All jokes aside its looking good. Shes really cleaning up nicely. :chug:

Too much rain today hampering my build !! Oh and as you'll read I ran out of wire ... AGAIN .. so you may be waiting a while for those sliders  :D

Ok so these will only demonstrate the rod cut down and welded in instead of the bolts to give a much cleaner look.

You may notice I kept it at the height of the stock running board trim. I don't like the sliders that run up to the bottom of the door,

However these wouldn't be as strong. Last picture is to demonstrate the row of fastening rods running above the floor and the row below run in the original holes for that standard running board trim.

Would you believe it, ...
About 2mm left and the wire runs out
I've pumped a 1kg role in two weeks ??
I had to take a photo I was that "WTF" !!

So I ended up with one finished and the other needing a couple last zips on the Lincoln ... :(
Murphy's Law !!

you were right about a much cleaner look...very very nice. Welds look sloppy, but getting better. :D Everytime I look at the things you keep fabricating I reconfirm my commitment to learn how to weld this year. Just one question...when you pick up more wire, every though of picking up two rolls? ;)

Tell me about it !!
You loose the first 6 feet of wire just feeding it up to the handle, so when you buy a 5kg this only happens once.
I'll be ordering a 5kg role today.

Flooded in today, which means a day off work.
So I'm about to head into the shed to potter a bit, but wish I had some wire for the Lincoln !!! :(
First photo is 4km down the road and the main bridge into where I live.
Second photo is 2km up the road, where I head up to swim, drive and take the dogs when I can.
As you can imagine ... it's been raining.

:)I assume that is a flux core wire your running? Might cut the wire speed down a little and shorten your arch...........would help getting away from the excess spatter...........also there is a lot of spatter sprays on the market that you spray the work first and the spatter doesn't stick........
Doing a good job keep up the good work!
Get a bigger roll of wire.

Sweeeet - Thanks for the info !! :notworthy:

I got my '79 a few weeks ago. Body is in excellent condition with minimal rust. I have been wanting to take tub off, clean up tub, paint, clean up frame...keep her good for a long time.
Your build is amazing. You are very talented and your work is excellent. (And I enjoy the humor between you and Alpha).;)
I must say though, I am now scared to death to start my project. :wtf: I can do a little welding, but your fabrication skills....wow. :notworthy:
Thank you for posting your build. I enjoy reading of your progress.

Thanks mate ... Appreciate it !!
One job at a time, and I'm sure your build will be a build to admire !!
Look forward to checking in on your build thread ...
:chug:

Well you see, Jon has lots of time on his hands since he lost his job as official village fire maker. So now he is the village mechanic...so it's all good.:D

I have to say, I was laughing, reading ya'lls "witty banter" to each other. Thank you for that.

Yes, yes that Alpha fellow sure is a funny guy ...
But I think he needs to spend less time on other's threads and more time needed to be spent on that Rocky Mountain High thread .. waiting waiting waiting for an update ... ??
Anyways, here's an update from the Aussie !!
Covers off, and gears inspected.
No teeth missing, or excessive wear.
After the rear oil had drained I had to get the black jelly out by hand !!
In big need of an oil change.
Front was fine too considering you'll notice a bit of dirt in there, from a broken diff breathing hose. It was blocked up hard at the port on the top so I'd say it got a bit in there before caking shut.

Paint is a high temp paint so I had to bake it ...
Maybe I wanted to bake it ...
Either way second photo is for Alpha ... I'm not slowing down for a 3 week wait for gaskets, so I went with this stuff ... I love the stuff !!
In saying that I'm posting this to see if it works without a gasket.
Should be fine on the front with a thicker diff cover only the 20 has a recess for a gasket.
I also used it on the rocker cover without a gasket so we'll see how that goes too ...

Love that colour.
Front is with one camera and you see it looks red..
Rear with another camera and it looks orange ..
LOVE IT !!
(Just realised you guys spell colour wrong....:D)

Looks great. SS bolts? Keep going, looks great!

This won't be too expensive Dear! That's what I keep saying. Over and over again.

Your progress is inspiring, makes me want to go paint some parts! Your build looks great, thanks for bringing us along.

It looks like things are coming together. WHen you get done, you are more than welcome to come to the USA and help with mine..hehehe.
