The oil pressure gauge on my new (to me) CJ7 goes crazy when the engine is running. It goes from 0 - pegged almost faster than you can see it. I'm thinking that it's either a short in the wire or a bad sender. Just wanted to see what you guys thought.

Mine could be "steered" by the dimmer-switch of the lights...
While the gauge- lights were bright i had no oil-pressure. While dimming the light
The oil-pressure slowly increased.

The solution was (like almost always) a bad ground of the oil-pressure gauge.

Fixed that and everything was ok.

Hope this helps.

It sounds to me like the wire is shorting out somewhere.

I had that problem. The wires were backwards. As soon as I turned on the ignition, it would jump across. I eventually put a mechanical gauge on.

Other thing i had was the fuel-gauge jumping fast to the full position immediately after ignition on.
Also (!) was a bad ground inside the speedometer gauge.
As i read in a famous post here about gauges: check your groud

My fuel gauge is off to and a lot of people have told me that the float leaks.

Got the oil pressure gauge fixed. Turned out the wire coming off the sender was barely connected. Pulled it off and pinched the connector a little bit with my needle nose and voila, good as new.

Glad to hear you got it fixed and it was a easy fix :chug:
