CJ7 front drive shaft disaster

CJ7 front drive shaft disaster
Im pretty sure your correct. I just wanted to do some more searching and get more info. ;)

IIRC a TF999 will solve that problem. I'm not sure a Dana 300 will though.
If I'm wrong someone here will correct me.

Thanks. :D What kind of lift are you running and how much lift does it give you? Is it spring over axle or spring under. What size tires are you running?

PetesCJ,
Love the Avatar!
Nothing that a set of King triple by passes can ruin.
What big eyes she has. :-)

Im fairly sure that the Tf 727 hangs lower and distorts the front drive shaft angle. I had a guy questioning me awhile back on this concerning his Scrambler. He went to the Tf 999 to cure it. Let me sleep on it and I can probably remember who it was. :o

I believe part of the 727 sticks out (in the way) where the 999 doesn't.
Someone here had some pic's once a long time ago.

You can see where the drive shaft hit the Transmission .
It ripped the bolt and threads out. Broke the bottom of the Transmission housing and spread metal through out the Transmission .
It does not look like it has to move much to clear.

I am not sure how much life is on it. it had a body and a suspension lift on it when I got it and the damage was done. We took off the body lift and started 4 linking it.
I still need to fix the original and primary challenge, drive line clearance. The dual drive lines seem like a viable solution short of replacing the Transfer Case .

That DS is about twice the dia of the OEM, DS.

Ok so it seems that the Dana 20s Texas bolt pattern makes it more difficult to clock the the round bolt pattern of the the Dana 300 .

Is there any known reason that a custom Texas plate could not be made to clock the Dana 20 ?

Is the Dana 300 a better Transfer Case then the Dana 20 besides the ease of clocking?

If I replace the Dana 20 with a Dana 300 then I also need to replace the TF722 tail sections as well.

The Dana 20 is a stout Transfer Case . The Dana 300 is considered the best for rock crawlers and such cause it has a lower gear ratio in its stock form. It can also be geared down to 4 to 1 while the Dana 20 only goes to 3.15.

I have a TF999 on my CJ7 and a big front driveshaft (new, custom-made locally) as big as a peeled pine pole. So far not even skinned paint (I paint everything... if it moves, salute it. if it don't, paint it).

Yea my mistake apparently was putting all that money into the TF 727.
Now I need to still fix the original problem and that is that the fat 727 impedes the front drive shaft.
Does anyone have the center to center measurements of a Dana 20 and Dana 300 TC?

You know a scout Dana 44 might offset the angle a just enough to the passenger side if you outboard the front springs.

Sent from my Galaxy S3 with Taptalk 2

I am really looking for a Transfer Case / shaft solution.
I have been told that clocking the TC could possibly give me the clearance I need but I can't clock the Dana 20 TC so a Dana 300 is a logical choice as clocking plates are readily available I just don't know if it will actually help with this clearance issue.

I would think someone like Advance Adapter or Novak would have that info.

I have my doubts that a 300 will help much. I say that because I have a Dana 300 that is clocked and I still had to clearance the pan on my TH350 to keep the shaft from hitting. In fact clocking it made it worse.

I talked to AA and they suggested a full size TC that has a greater distance between the shafts but that causes length problems with the short wheel base Jeep so no real solution yet.
