Dana 20 Leak

Dana 20 Leak
The TSM I read was a '74 that was online. Be dang if I can find it now:rolleyes::mad:

What FSM are you using for reference?
I'll ck my FSM, MR-252 to see how it's shown for the D/300.

Also have read where folks have used 50W non-detergent engine oil for the T-14 /15 tranny. Have you ever come across that?
LG
FSM SM-1046,

I haven't used 50w in my T-14 , but I have added 50w in my T-18 . The build is still in progress which has the T-18 so I don't have a report on the claimed easier shifting then GL4 or GL5.

HH- the OP has owned his CJ for a few years, and doesn't know when the last time the Transfer Case fluid has been changed. Posting Transfer Case and Transmission fluid capacities, along with the proper way to fill a Transfer Case (not from the top of the Transmission ) is every bit on topic.

A good reference to being off topic would be the 20+ posts concerning a "coin" in the "what did you do to or with your CJ today" thread.

Yes we got off topic, but had fun doing it also. Sorry we did that to you Posi. We will try not to do that again

Yep, your right.... I make the mistake of thinking of a board like this as being sort of a conversation with loose boundaries.

You have done nothing to me, so there is no need to apologize. But thanks for the positive post.

Hate to be the one to bring this up, but we (yes, me included) are getting WAY off topic here.

Are you sure your not a politician? Sure looks and sounds like a flip flop to me.

I said that I made the mistake, I.E. I realize that I tend to wander off topic then realize it and try to bring it back. Not sure where the flip flop is there. There is no defense for me and no way to come back from the abys, I know it, I'm just trying to get along. The filling the Transmission through the top and letting the oil migrate to the Transfer Case thing was just a method I found to be radically different and interesting. I don't do it myself, this is where the loose conversation came in.

We own CJ's-Who stays on the 'trail'.:poke:

Thanks for all the replies here's the update guys..

When it first started leaking real bad I took it to the car wash and sprayed down the Dana 20 and T-18 with some degreaser and tried to clean them off the best I could to try and find the leak, they were so caked with grime I couldn't tell at first, so maybe some water got in then. That's when I found it was coming out of the vent.

Got to the point where it wouldn't start today without the clutch depressed and would die when I let the clutch out. After a few minutes it would start like normal in neutral but wouldn't shift into gear. First time I've had these symptoms.

Took out the fill plug on the Dana 20 and the stuff that came out was the color of coffee and the consistency of pancake batter. Once that slowed down I pulled the drain plug and water came out like I had just turned on the faucet and then more of the thick stuff came out.

On the T-18 I pulled the fill plug and the stuff that came out was the color of grey Permatex and was even thicker like grease and was piling up on itself in the drain pan. When I pulled the drain plug water came out again like I had turned on the faucet then some thick grey nastiness came out.

Currently letting them both drain out now. On the T-18 more is coming out of the fill than the drain.

I got some cheap NAPA fluid to put in and want to use it to flush them both out.

What do you guys make of all this? I've never seen anything like it.

Have you ever drained and refilled these before?

Yes-When was the last time you changed this oil?
What about the diffs?
LG

I change the oil regularly but this is the first time I've drained the T-18 and Dana 20

Not talking about engine oil/filter.
How long have you had this Jeep?
You have water damage. Really need to ck the axle oil.
LG

Ive had the Jeep for about 3 years. Didn't drive it a ton when I first got it it had electrical problems. Mostly been fixing it up and driving it around town but never had any problems until now.

Haven't checked the axle oil either but I could do that as well

Checking all fluid levels and their color is part of preventive maintenance, and should be done at least every engine oil change. ;)
Remember this-The cheapest thing that you will EVER put into your Jeep, is the fluid's. Use the best.

Hey Lumpy you are right about the fluids :chug: but I don't need to change mine very often, my Transmission and t.c. Leak fast enough where I just keep adding fluid

Add a bottle of Lucas Power Steering Stop Leak to the tranny & t'case.
That should stop the leak in about 500 miles.
LG

Nah. Then I would have to start changing it :)

Changed the fluids today and she seems good as new. Ran and drove great. Took it for a quick ride around the block, didn't leak a drop and went into 4WD no problem. Both the vents were fine and no sign of damage so far.

Gonna change out the axle oils next since I have no idea if its ever been done.

Pretty sure my 76 has the AMC20 in the rear and Dana 30 in the front. Does that sound right to you guys?

:ww::dbanana::banana:

Best way to learn what model T/C you have would be to post up pictures.
