Hi all

I have a Dana 44 from an 86 CJ7 that i am working on.
not too sure about the ring i pulled out. it sits beside the carrier bearing in between the bearing and axle tube. not sure where to get one. spoke to the parts guy, he cant find it listed. any one know what this is? if it is needed? and where to get one if needed.

Looks like a seal of some sort, made from silicon sealer.
Hope you mark'd the location and position of those carrier bearing caps.

Yes. Marked the carrier bearing caps. Also videod the tear down. So do I need those in there?

I agree with Torx. Looks like something that someone put in after the factory. I assume this is a rear 44? I know that on front axles there are 2 ways of doing the seals. Some axles have no seal at the carrier and allow differential oil to flow out to the hub bearings to lubricate them. Others have a seal (never saw just an O ring) where you found this O ring, thereby preventing oil from getting to the hub bearings. These setups require that the hub bearings be packed in grease. I know this is true on the Dana 30 axle. After much research, I recently converted a Dana 30 from having no seal where you found the O ring, to sealing the carrier and just packing the front hubs with grease. Much cleaner if I have to remove the lock outs for service. No oil running out. Are your hubs packed in grease? If they are, you would need a seal where the O rings are. If the hubs are not packed in grease and rely on differential oil for lubrication, you are lucky that the O rings leaked enough oil to prevent the hub bearings from burning out. I had the same problem as you, none of the parts guys could find this seal. I had to measure the axle tube bore and the axle diameter and locate a seal that way. The newest axle I have done this with has been a 79, I am not sure if yours are any different.
 
The P.O. might have installed that o-ring to stop an oil leak which would require the bearing to be packed with grease as oil would not be allowed to pass.
 
You don't need a inner seal on the later rear 44s the gear fluid lubes the bearings. If you choose you can grease the bearings and add inner seal part number 994258 (72-75 44).
 
Thanks for all the responces. I spoke to a great guy at Just Jeeps, he informed me that when they pressed in the axle tubes from the factory, they used a silicone/ gasket maker to seal them. When they are pressed the excess rolls and looks like what I have pictured above.
