Dieseling

Dieseling
Runs Grreat!!!!

Until i went to start it again later. I pumped the pedal 3 or four times them started. Nothing. Pedal to floor kept cranking and eventually got it to sputter with pedal down.

How warm was the engine when you pumped the gas 3 or 4 times? Being a new carb, with new accelerator pump diaphragms, they do tend to put out a good bit of fuel. It might have just been flooded. I'd look down into the carb after you shut it off when it's warm to see if you see any drips of fuel at all coming from your boosters. That would indicate the float levels set too high. Even if I haven't ran the engine, as long as the temp is above ~70, I barely need to pump the gas once on mine to get it to fire -- and that's with a carb with no choke at all.

I pulled plugs, they were wet. I dried em off and reinstalled . No start. Voltage is at like 10 from cranking, is that enough to spark. I hope thats the problem

Looked at it again, battery isn't taking a charge(optima) I'm only getting 11. Volts, it's usually much higher. Cranked the :dung: out of it, hoping that the hei just doesn't have enough power

Overnight charge, still low voltage. This was running great when I put the new carb on. I'm lost. If I stand on the pedal, it sputters but won't start. Any ideas? Battery? Hei dizzy. Gapped plugs to .o40

If its cranking, it should have enough juice to spark right?

Not necessarily. It might have a weak spark with low voltage. Weak spark, coupled with possibly fuel fowled plugs would get you only a sputter if anything. Have your plugs dried out? You might have to try taking your battery to a Pep Boys/Advance/Auto Zone to have them charge it for you. My charger couldn't handle putting a decent charge on an Optima, either.

When you say you can get a sputter when you stand on the pedal, that still leads me to believe that the plugs are fuel fowled. Think about it -- throttle floored = throttle blades wide open = letting as much air into the cylinders as possible (NOT as much fuel as possible). I think your plugs are still wet.

Ok. Took battery to get tested. Its fine. I misread gauge. I pull the first two plugs on the passenger side and cranked it, no spark. Dried them. Upon wondering, i noticed the vac advance was bent. I took yhe cover off and a pice of plastic was popped up. It doesnt look bad, but im sure this is a precise piece. Ordering unless someone has a better idea

I threw a belt and thats what hit advance. When it sputters it shakes violently. I think just a couple cylinders are going. White gassy smoke too

It all sounds like timing. If you lost a belt and it hit he distributor it could have easily jacked up the timing.

Put a timing light on it and get hag back in spec.

I cant even get it to run to time. I marked it when i adjusted and it hasnt moved. The vac just bent real bad and a piece of the innards cracked

Can you post up a pic of the damage to the distributor? If it's really damaged that bad, it might be a goner.

I wouldn't say the plugs are bad just yet...dumb question -- when you checked for spark, you did have your plugs grounded, right?

If the vacuum advance canister is bent, the rod that connects to the diaphragm that controls your spark advance could be messing with your timing. Well, I won't say could be...I just might say it is.

Plugs bad?
Shouldn't be, once they are dry they should fire again.
While your looking at the distributor take all the plugs out and crank the engine over (don't hit the gas peddle) a few time to be sure all the gas is out of the cylinders. You have been doing a lot of cranking with no fire.

It has to be the hei. Its getting proper power yet producing spark in a few cylinders. Ill post pics anywho

Pulled all plugs, trsted with respective wire. They all fire. I cranked it a bunnch with no plugs in,,spit a ton of fuel. Gonna go to dinner and let it dry. Should i restab dizzy

Again, went to start after re doing the dizzy and plugs. If i stand on it, it'll sputter, but shakes out of balance. Fills garage with white smoke that smells of gas. Why would it run like s dream, then just :dung: out

Sounds like its dumping raw fuel. Could be a stuck float if you had junk in your fuel lines or if your filter is dirty.

Do you have an electric pump or mechanical? I'd try looking at the venturi boosters while you have someone crank it over (unless you have a remote starter trigger).

The other thing that it could be a problem is a fuel pressure regulator. Even if you don't have an external regulator, many fuel pumps (electric, and most factory mechanical) are internally regulated. If the internal regulator has gone bad, it will push fuel past the needles even though the floats are holding them closed. I had an internal regulated electric fuel pump do that to me several years back.

Found it!!! The butterfly was stuck closed. It was only getting fuel. Runs awesome!
