Drive shaft orientation

Have a 69 CJ5 with v6. My dad had removed the Transmission and drive shafts. We installed the Transmission before he passed but not the drive shafts. My manual does not refernce which ends attches to the differential and what end to the Transmission . Since the shaft going to the back wheels is a larger diameter, knowing what is front and back is easy. However both shafts can expand and contact. Does the shorter shaft, which goes inside the larger diameter and longer shaft attach to the Transmission or the differential. With the exception of shafy diameter the two shafts look the same. Or does it make a difference?

Short shaft goes to the Transfer Case , for both.

If you have pulled them apart, make sure to 'clock' the u-joints the same. (inline with each other)

I include two photos of the rear and front driveshafts as I received the Jeep from the PO. I am not totally certain, but I think the front shaft will "telescope" more than the rear shaft. The orientation is probably significant, else the design would yield driveshafts that you couldn't tell apart.

My front shaft had pretty crooked dings from rocks, so I got a local shop to cut down a new three inch diameter truck shaft to fit the CJ7 .

Thanks I checked and have them in correctly. Too my knowledge my dad never seperated the pieces so they should be together correctly. I will however make a mental note and when I replaced the u joints next will take an extra minute to check.

I believe that the slip yoke goes forward. So the slip yoke on the back driveshaft is at the Transfer Case and the slip yoke on the front driveshaft is at the differential. If I am wrong please say so, as that is how mine are.
