Rotella 15W-40 would work well.
That other is just 'hype'.
That 'book', was written long before Rotella came out.
Get a Wix filter from NAPA-NO FRAM!

Most all of the diesel oils have changed blends in the last couple years, due to federal emission standards.

You can purchase 4 oz. zddp oil additives from most all cam companies. You can then use any current decent standard or synthetic oil and get flat tappets cams to survive.

Any other oil that you can find that says for off road use only... It a great alternative. It still has the good stuff.

Joe Gibbs or brad penn oil is also an alternative..although pricey.

Do what you feel comfortable with. Most oil problems happen during initial break in..

Thanks for the replies. I'm trying to avoid the need for an oil additive, if possible. I haven't heard of WIX filters, but I am also anti-fram. I appreciate the opinions and certainly welcome more, as I won't be doing the oil change for another week or two.

Edelbrock oil is actually torco oil not really sure what blend though (sr1 or sr5) or possibly a custom for edelbrock? Torco is good oil though. Try napa or any equipment oriented parts house for wix . also our orielys carries wix. 51522 for the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l and 51060 for a AMC 304

Shell Rotella would be a good choice.
Don't go switch'n brands-Your seals will get bathed in one 'chem-pac' only that way.
Me-I've run Castrol 20W50 in my jeep for 29+ years, with no issues.

Tinman- great article. Also, the Wix filter you referenced, part number 51060 is different than the filter that came up when I typed in my 74 CJ5 AMC 304 . It came back with part number 51258. I compared the two and the only difference is the height. 5.1 vs 4.3 inches tall. Is there any advantage over going with the taller one? If I do, I assume that I will need a little more than the 5 quarts that my FSM states.

Thanks

More filter media and more oil probably wouldn't hurt your 304s feelings:)

Stopped by my local o'reillys to pick up my oil and wix filter. They didn't have any of the Edelbrock or Lucas in stock, but they could get me some from DC, so I opted for the Lucas, as I have been satisfied with their other products and will be putting their 80-90 gear oil in my differentials. I just received a call that UPS will not ship the oil, so I am back to square one. I think I will trust you guys on this one and use the 15w-40 Rotella in my AMC 304 . I should go with conventional and not synthetic, correct? Will I need to add a ZDDP additive to this?

Also, I'm not sure if my differentials are Limited slip or not. The Lucas 80-90 gear oil says it's safe to use in Limited slip differentials. My question is, will I damage/hurt anything if I use this oil and DO NOT have Limited slip?

I'm going with the GL4 Sta-Lube 85-90 gear oil from Napa for my Transmission and Transfer Case .

Thank you!
