Need some experienced advice. 1972 CJ5 , AMC 304 V8.Found that my dipstick tube had been brazed together at one point. While working on the engine, I banged into it and broke it off where it was brazed, about a 1/4 in from block. can someone tell me if these are just pressed in or do I have to take the oil pan off to replace it

They are pressed into the block. They can be difficult to remove but not impossible.
Generic replacements are almost always slightly undersized and do not fit tightly or if you try a Mopar one it is almost impossible to press into the block.
Bulltear has replacements that I have found to fit the best.

I would think something like an easy out screw extractor would work. This would grab hold of the inside diameter of the tube an you could twist it out. Good Luck

I just found a youtube video showing a guy removing a broken dip stick tube from an AMC v8. I believe it is titled "removing broken dip stick tube an AMC 360". You might give it a watch.

The tube is hard and brittle. Be careful.
I used an 'easy-out' broken screw extractor for the one I helped replace many years ago.
Use some heat, as I believe some type of adhesive was used when the engine was built.
Good luck!
