Good better best plugs etc

Good better best plugs etc
Dolf -

I've been running K&N filters in dusty Arizona conditions for years on about all my vehicles and never knew how much damage I was doing to my engines.”
If you have been using K&N for that many years in a dusty climate, it would be interesting to know how many miles you have driven with the K&N, and what damage, if any, you have had.

That was a bit of sarcasm on my part but to the point:

750 Honda - 15,000 miles
GS 1100E Suzuki - 18,000 miles
Dodge Vista - 95,000 miles
'80 Jeep CJ5 - 15,000 on 4 cylinder & 60,000 on a swapped in 231 Buick
Izuzu Trooper 98,000 miles
Ford full size Bronco - 192,000 miles
'84 Harley Davidson - 35,000 miles
'75 CJ5 AMC 360 - 3,000 miles

Those are the vehicles I've used K&N filters on with no apparent engine trouble, ever. I lost radiators, a Transmission , the typical Ford oil leaks, U-joints, tires, batteries, distributor caps, plug wires and a couple hubs, but absolutely no engine or carburetor troubles. Maybe I'm just not doing it right.

Facts are stubborn things. ;)

That's now 4 links to K&N airfilter testing I've posted. That backs up my statement about what a piss-pour of a job they do.

Where you live, with that micron size fine silica sand flying around in the air. A paper filter would be your best bet.;)

BTW: I have lived in the Mojave Desert for almost 24yrs. I will only use quality paper air-filters like Wix.

I can only lead the 'horse' to water :D

I do enjoy drinking that K&N cool aide.

This sort of reminds me of selecting a pool filter. Many years ago we had a swimming pool built. The builders and pool designers pushed the DG filter hard over the other filtration options. Basically DG, cartridge filters and sand filters. I wanted a plain simple sand filter. You'd have thought I was going to dip my children in radioactive waste. "Sir, the DG filter removes far more contaminants than the san filter. If you want a truly sparkling clean pool experience the DG filter is the only way to go." We went with the sand filter, I took care of that pool for 17 years and it was rarely anything other than sparkling clear. If I wasn't there was always some minor mechanical system break down. The sand filter is an old method, but for practical applications it is great.

Then there's the old story about the Soviet Union in their attempt to make a nuclear bomb. My numbers are probably wrong, but the lesson is still accurate. The Russian spend many millions refining their uranium, when Lennon pushed the scientists to find out why it was taking so long and why it was so much more expensive than the Americans uranium the scientists proudly said, "We are making what is clearly a superior product. Our uranium is 96% pure and the American uranium is only 88% pure." Lennon quickly said, "Yes but evidently the American uranium is good enough."

I haven't been following this thread till now so here goes.
I tried a K&N filter years ago (on my truck) and noticed that my throttle body got dirty,
went back to paper and what do you know, no more dirt. I'm a paper guy
again. ( I do drive on gravel roads a lot )

Does the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l free of mods prefer a certain brand of spark plugs? Is there any neg traits noticed with certain brands when it comes to the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ? I have seen in the past oil filter debate but I was curious if there is a debate on stockish air filters?

WOW - You ask about spark plugs, oil filters AND air filters in a single post in a thread???? Sounds like you are trolling.

Sounds like the OP is doing a little winter time maintenance, doesn't want to waste time trying different products and came to the one place where he can get solid advice. But as is hinted at, this is a wide open field with many opinions. For instance I have a brand new K&N air filter. I bought it out of habit as I've done for most of my vehicles, but if this thread was posted before the purchase it is very likely that I would not have purchased the K&N. It ain't going in the trash though.

Spark plugs, well that is mostly subjective and I don't believe you can really go wrong there.

Oil, that is a subject I'm struggling with right now. Past threads on the subject show a strong following for Rotella a diesel engine oil. Why? The AMC engines are old school products that like old school oil. Rotella is supposed to still have old school ingredients, but lately I've heard that even Rotella has changed their formula to meet modern requirements. ...... Just did a search on Rotella oils. Now I'm more confused, I'm sure the Rotella guys are using Diesel oil, which one I don't remember.

Hedge-ALL, I have ever use in my Jeep/AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l is Castrol 20W-50 for the last 30 years. I only use Wix filters too.
What are you run'n for oil now?

Nope not trolling just wanted info on spark plugs and Air filters. I have a new rig and am doing some fixn and have never put any thought into plugs or air filters. So I went to the boys who have the knowledge.

Fair enough. So now that you've asked the questions and received some great answers, which ones are you going to use?

Seems silly, but that is a really good question, one that should follow all threads like this one.

Q - I've got a problem

A - every possible answer under the sun with several posters disagreeing with one another

Q - Some clarification of the problem

A - More focused answers with several posters disagreeing with one another

Resolution - The OP comes back and lets us know how the problem was resolved

Follow up - one notable poster comes in and tells everyone they were wrong..... :)

The auto stores in the USA seem to have a better selection of parts then what I have in Sask. The go to higher end filters up here are Wix. I am not sure if it is a lack of choice or a quality issue although they seem to be good quality. I will replace plugs with copper for now. When the better half and myself head down to Bismarck we will hit the auto stores like bandits. So Neuner I guess for now my choice is based on what is available. We have car guys up here but jeepers of the ole stuff are rare. I do find it nice to get the different views of the forum members because they have been there done that. Hedgehog That is funny Thanks for the input everyone.
