Never-ever seen a '7' that didn't use knobs.
CJ-The last year of the latches was 1975 then?

Really makes me feel good that it was you that asked this LG. I've seen your username all over these threads so far and the fact that you weren't sure about that makes me feel like even the smartest guys on here don't know everything! looking forward to your responses to my future threads as well!!

If it is the stock windshield but there is no retainer channel,
The reason there is no retainer channel is because it had a hardtop on it. The retainer is for a soft top.

Honestly the mix of parts makes your CJ a little confusing and more interesting. I like it! The only thing is you will have to be well schooled in exactly what you have. Why? Buying parts my friend. It's a lot easier to stop at AutoZone (for instance) and ask for a part that will fir on your CJ. For instance, you probably have a '74 Transmission , but '76 windshield wiper motor.

The tub is not a 74, it's either a 76 or 77.

The 78-86 CJ came from the factory with a rectangle fuel filler housing.
The 76 and 77 came with a round filler housing.
Your tub has a round filler housing = 76/77

Hey everybody, back with another couple questions question! First of all, thanks to the help of forum members, I now know that my tub is from 76/77 while I think both the engine and tranny are from 74. I plan to check the rear passenger side wheel well this afternoon to see if the frame SSN matches the VIN. I feel like I need to know everything I got before I start making purchases and replacing things. Any other things/places I should check for that would help me identify some of the parts on this CJ?

Second, the jeep is running and driving and I enjoy having the option of taking it out on weekend cruises even while I am working on fixing it up. So, I want to make sure all the lights work so no one rear ends me or anything. I discovered this weekend that while my hazards work both front and back, my turn signals do not (front or back). I found the 2 flashers hanging behind the dash (there is no fuse panel) and replaced the one that wasn't ticking. Nothing. I tried to follow the wires from that flasher up into a mess of electrical tape, cut away as much of it as I could, but could not find an inline fuse. One of the wires is white while the other is a redish pink. Do these 2 colors sound right and if so, which one would have the inline fuse? Where should I expect to find this inline fuse? Do you think the PO could have wrapped it in tape along with all the other wires behind the dash or am I looking in the wrong place?:confused:

Thanks in advance for the help! :chug:

First thing to check when an electrical circuit fails is the ground or in other words the connection that goes to the negative terminal on the battery which is usually by way of the frame or body which can make for a poor connection. After that you usually have to trace things down. CJ wiring schematics can usually be found in a repair manual, on line, or I hear the best on is through Prospero's Garage which is on line.

Did you try this? -->> 1972 CJ5 Electrical and Wiring Diagram (Factory Manual) - Jeep-CJ Documents and Manuals

It's for a 72 but it should be very close to you 74. I would grab the multimeter and work my way back from the flasher.

Wow, thank you for this. I have the 74 Technical Service Manual but wherever this wiring diagram came from did a much better job at making it easy for me to understand! Thanks again!!
I scanned that from an original 72 service manual. And your welcome. :)

Hey everybody!

It also came with a hard top (bonus!) but I have already taken it off for the nice weather we are HOPEFULLY about to get around here. Now here is where my questions start:

:)
1976 was the big change year for the CJ's.............that top also may have gotten caught in the twi-light zone as it doesn't seem to fit correctly at the tail-gate.

Windshield angle also changed in 1976 as well as the door angle to the top, so there may be some mixing up there as to why the top seems short in the rear?

Without being there it's hard to tell.........but if the wrong cowl seal was used (early vs late) it would lessen the angle at the windshield and perhaps move the top forward........???

:D:D:D:D

Here is a really good wiring diagram to help you out. Worth every penny in my opinion. Jeep CJ 1974 1975 | Prospero's Garage

Also don't feel alone about everything not being original: http://www.jeep-cj.com/forums/f49/your-cj-original-maybe-not-heavy-pictures-25934/

Thanks PB! I had already found your thread about your 74... This is definitely going to be an interesting (and fun) process of discovery. I looked on the frame last night - couldn't find anything imprinted. Looks like it was pretty heavily lined with something years ago... I'm sure I'll be contacting you sometime in the near future with questions since you've clearly been through this!

Also, Prospero's wiring diagram ordered!

Alright guys, some more questions and pretty much looking for your opinion since I'm not sure there is a right or wrong answer.

The tires are shot on this CJ (old and cracking, leaking) so I know I will need tires before I want to drive it any further than down to the grocery store and back. Here is my question: do I get the tires and wheels now? Is there the potential that what I buy might not work with my setup if I decide to change my drums to discs or have to do an axle swap for some unforseen reason? Right now I have the tires and wheels off and I'm just trying to clean up everything underneath and see if there are any emergencies but as I've said in previous posts, it's running and drives and I'd love to drive it on the weekends while I fix it up if possible.

Also, if going with the wheel and tire package now, recommendations? Is there a place that will ship mounted and balanced tires direct to my house? I'm thinking something like a 31 BFG AT. Thanks!

Online places do the package. I have had Tire Rack ship me the wheels with tires mounted and balanced and ready to go on the vehicle. And as for worrying, I am not sure of the rear discs, but if you don't go any larger than the size of the front discs, i would think you would be fine.

An axle swap would only be an issue if you went away from the CJ bolt pattern or went with narrow or wide track and you currently have the other.

Experts may have more or different advice.

Tire Rack is good, another is Discount Tire Direct, then there are the big three, 4WD, Quadratec, and Morris. If they don't ship them together and balanced, almost any tire shop will do that for you. Shipping everything together becomes difficult for some stores as they have to go a certain way due to weight. If you stay with 31's you should be good to go on all you equipment and fit. When you go any larger than this, you have to consider changing some of the drivetrain and making more room for the fit. Also, look around at some of the tire stores in town, you might find what you want right there.

PS: For additional questions start another thread.

With 31's, I wouldn't worry about rear disc at all.
Is that the tire size that's on your Jeep in the pictures?
I would be more inclined to install 1-piece Moser rear axles and get rid of the OEM, 2 piece junk.
I don't recall if you ever posted your R&P ratio.

For the tire size currently on the Jeep, I want to say they are P78-15LT. Looking online, it doesn't look like that is popular size (either the N78-15 or the P78-16 are more common) but it is an old tire so maybe they used to be popular? I also think they are mounted on a 15X8.50 wheel but again, that doesn't look very common online. I'm at work now or I'd go check but I will when I get back this afternoon. I think I'd like to go to a 31X10.50-16 BFG A/T or similar.

As for the R&P, I was told when I purchased it that everything was standard so I assumed 3.73. That being said, I'm still cleaning off all the gunk on the rear housing and cover to see if there is a tag. I am pretty sure one of the POs did a full spray job of some kind of sealant on the undercarriage and that kept me from being able to read any SN on the rear frame so I'm hoping that isn't the case with the axles as well but it very well could be.
