I am rebuilding a set of Dana 44 axles froma scout and I finished the front last week. I just finished cleaning the housing on the rear and was taking apart the carrier when I found the drive pin and spiders are shot. I found significant wear on the case as well where the thrust washers sat. So know I have a choice. I was considering dropping in a locker of some sort but I only want a selectable for the better street manners. Those are more than I want to spend at this point and the Jeep will not be a hard core offroad vehicle. I am not sure at this time how much it will see dirt. So my other option would be a good LSD and then I can drop in a lunch box locker for the front end since I have the twin stick for the Dana 300 this makes good sense to me.

So I read allot about the Truetrac from Eaton but they do not recommend tall tires and many people have blown them up due to the amount of small moving parts. The stock replacements like the Track lock are not an option as they are not very good. I had one before in a CJ7 . So what about the rest? Auburn has a cheap one but it is not rebuildable. Yukon makes the Powerlock I think. Anyone have good experience with the aftermarket LSD unit?

If I have to I may go to the Ziplocker from Yukon but $750 is a hard number to swallow on something that will see Limited offroad use.

The tall tires for the TruTrac that Eaton is talking about is 35" and up. They are one of the most reliable LSD's around, hence the reason they've been around for decades.

If you want a LSD, truetrac is the only way to go.

I've been running a truetrak for a few years now with both 33's and 35's it's still in one piece. :) I'd buy another one if I was looking for a LS.

Thanks olddog. I have been reading on some drag racing forums and the street able guys swear by them. Summit racing has it for $459 shipped so I may pull the trigger tonight.

That seems like a good price to me. I have been all over looking for a Truetrac for an AMC20 and can't find one cheaper than $550.

I bet the Dana 44 is lower cost due to the huge market.

They're even cheaper for the Dana 30 . I just picked one up for just under $400.

Yep, I have one for my 2.73 AMC20 (uninstalled) and want one for my 3.31 AMC20 . About 4-5 years ago with were around $330, then they had a HUGE price jump.....

Yeah, I need one for 3:54's. Let me know if you find a good price.

I regeared to 4.27, installed Aussie lockers and went with heavy duty shafts four years ago. No problems.

I ordered my Truetrac from Summit Racing's Ebay account last night at 9pm and I got an email at 6am stating that it already shipped. Those guys are very fast. I will have the new unit by tomorrow night. I paid $479 total and that price works for me. Selectable lockers are almost double that in cost. I could still by a lunch box locker for the front and be in it for less and an ARB or similar.

I always considered the Tru Trac for a front axle. Is this for the Scrambler? Id love to hear what you think of it for the rear. It may be something Id like to add to Vickis Cj.

Yes it is for the scrambler. I had the track lock in my exwifes CJ7 and she did pretty damn good offroad with that less than stellar unit so I think I will be happy with this style. It will be at least another year before I can tell anyone if I like it though. I barely started on the body interior and haven't even made a final engine decision.

Yeah but ebay had free shipping! LOL.

ETA, well :dung:, you did too. Good score! That's a value meal at Mcdees!

Not sure that's a good thing! I should have bought the one you found. :D

That AMC20 is the most expensive part on this Jeep to build so far.

Gears, Axles, Master kit, Truss kit, Trutrac, Disc Brake Kit.

About $1,400 by the time I'm done. Yikes!

I have about that in my 20 on the CJ5 . Moser, arb locker, spring perches, new gears and rebuild kit. Gets pricy quick.
