Anybody know if they make a lunch box locker to fit the AMC20 ? I wasn't planning on swapping the rear end if I could help it.

Yes, I believe just about all the lunchbox locker companies offer one for the AMC20 axle.

I know for a fact that spartan does. I will try to get a part number for you
Spartan part number is SLM2029

I have one in mine. In fact, I'll trade you my AMC20 for yours. Its a daily driver, so I have been planning on getting rid of it.

I had a Lockrite in mine back in 1993 so they have been around for along time.

Make sure you have an open differential in your AMC20 . If it is a Limited slip or similar, you have to replace it with an open diff before the lunch box will go in. At least for the Aussie locker(lunch box). Others can chime in on the Lock Rite etc.

Good point. The Lunch box lockers are made to go into the OEM open carrier.

On the left is the Trac-Lok. If a jeep CJ came from the factory with a Limited slip diff that's what you would get. ALL lunch box lockers are made to fit into an OEM open carrier because they just can't make drop in lockers for any diff carrier.
If it isn't an OEM Limited slip it could be one of the following. Notice the carriers are all MUCH different.

On the other hand if you already have a Limited slip, you wouldn't want to replace it with a Lunch Box Locker.

The clutches on my Limited slip are gone. I thought the Aussie Locker was a great replacement but going back to an open dif to make the change seems self defeating. Still in the thinking mode on this one.

Actually Lock Rite makes a replacement for a TrakLok diff... go to their web site for the correct part #.

Does anyone have any experience with the Detriot truetrac?

I've had one in my front 30 for a few years now, it pulls good as long as both wheels are on the ground.

some information may lead you to believe that you can do this swap without removing the carrier and the ring gear. this is not true.

I put a Spartan in the front axle. Other than pulling the carrier, it was remarkably ease.

If I were to be putting one in the AMC20 I would want to at least recheck the alignment on the R&P and perhaps do new bearings and shims on everything.

I was not as concerned about this on the front as it was , first of all, the front and the Dana carrier has the shims inside the carrier bearings. so they did not wander or get misplaced.

IO, I just put a lock right on my front Dana 30 and didn't have to pull the carrier. The instructions mentioned that depending on which gear ratio you have depends on if you might have to pull the carrier too. I guess with 2:73's I got lucky :chug:

I know that with a locker in the front I need power steering!:D

So, what do you think? How does it work?

Amazing! From the day I got my all stock 8 I had a plan in my head on what order to upgrade things.
1 winch (done)
2 lift-tires (done)
3 front lunch box locker (done)
4 4-1 low Transfer Case (next)
5 e-locker rear (last)

As each upgrade has been completed and taken out and tested I've said "Wow, what a difference!" , but the front locker has so far has been the best. I suppose the lift and tires help with the "Wow" factor of the locker as well ;)
Spent yesterday offroading with a buddy who has a lifted XJ, and we spent a lot of time waiting on him trying multiple passes to get up things I idled up first pass. More than a few times, I had to go back and help place rocks in the low spots so he could get through.

IO, power steering is my friend :p All kidding aside, with power steering the only difference I notice with the hubs locked is that the locker causes the front wheels to try and straighten themselves. You have to always keep a hand on the wheel and pay attention.

Yep - the front really wants to go straight with a LS or locker, but it is well worth the problems.

I put several in the model 20 axles without doing more than sliding the axle shafts out and the. Pulling the spider gears. The whole locker went in with the carrier in place. It is pretty simple job actually.
