Okay, again looking for opinions. My '66 CJ5 has a swapped Dana 30 front end, with open carrier and warn manual hubs (currently running 33" with 3.73, though once they wear out I intend to go down to 31"). I do not do heavy off road, but enough were an open carrier just is not acceptable. Based on type of off-road and cost, I'm looking at the lunchbox lockers. Threads I have read seem to report positive functioning of these units. All seem to work essentially the same, but looking for those that may have used different makes and your experience. Aussie, Spartan, LockRight, all seem to fit the type of off road I do and intend to stay. I may, some day in the future, go with a selectable in the read (Dana 44 , center pinion), but for the front I think the auto-locker is a good fit. What say those with experience of auto / lunchbox lockers up front?

Do you have power steering??? you will need it.

Yup. Any other words of wisdom or advice?

I'v had good luck with my quik lock, does the job. if i had the chance to do it over i would save the money and get an OX.

I have installed many of these for friends, they seem to work very well.
What do you have in the rear?
LG

That's a good question... At best the rear is a worn out LSD, worst case it too is an open. Does not climb nearly as well as the '59 with LSD, though crawl ration is nearly equal. The 66 spins one tire only in both front and rear when she's stuck.

I put the Lock Right in the front a couple years ago, very happy with the results :chug:

I haven't installed a locker in the front yet, will in the future. I did install a LOKKA brand in the rear and have been very pleased with it...and low cost. Basically the LOKKA unit is the same as the Aussie. Good luck! :chug:

Another fan of Lock Right. Just put them in front and rear of the Willys. Perform great. A little noisy on pavement in tight turns, but acceptable.:chug:

DON'T DO IT!
No steering and stuff brakes easy.
LG
Ya, I bet you would break stuff!
You ruin the carrier and axle/spider gears. If you ever wanted to replace them you're gona be out more than a lunch box locker.

Lockright in the front of both my CJs, makes a world of difference off road and doesn't affect on road driveability when unlocked. Just do it, you won't be disappointed the first time off road with it in there.
