1974 CJ5, AMC 258 I6. Stock everything as far as I can tell.
My engine ('74 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l ) has been bogging down when trying to drive off from idle. This mainly happens if I try to drive without letting it warm up for a few minutes. I cleaned the carb (lazily, just sprayed some cleaner down in there with the air filter removed) just in case I had a little build up, but I'm guessing its a vacuum leak. Couldn't find any leaks near the carb gaskets or hoses. But I did find that there was no hose connected to the thing labeled 3.051-6 between it and the carbeurator as labeled in the diagram in this link:

http://www.jedi.com/obiwan/jeep/wagoneer/pics/vac_advance_i6.png

Trying to figure out a) what 3.051-9 is b) where on my carter carb that hose should go?

I put my finger on the nozzle on there and it has suction, so should I plug it or put a line there?

I've got more parts to figure out but I'll start with just this one for now, thanks!

Since that is for the vacuum advance system, definitely want to fix that.

You may have "too much" choke so when it is cold and closed the engine cant get enough air. Hard to say though. Could be related to the lines you have off.

I would say hook everything up as shown and plug any other ports. Just because there is no suction at idle, doesn't mean there isn't later (higher RPM)

I run ported vacume to the dizzy when hot / warm, and when first starting up it runs off manifold vac.

This advances the dizzy a bit during start up so it runs a little easier.

This is achieved with a CTO switch.

If the vac doesn't clean up the running issues, take the top off the carb and look in the bowl for build up. Spraying carb cleaner into the butterfly opening will not help a dirty bowl.

I just found a 1/8" of dirt in the bottom of my bowl... Submerged a not so sealed tank into muddy water... ;)

Anywho, just a thought.

JR: So you're saying: don't be lazy cleaning the carb. Will do:)

Does anyone know where on my carter carb that line should go? I can't find any open ports or anything where it would go.

ALSO,
does anyone know what the cylinder in the top left of the upper picture is? My lines don't go to anything like that...

In a manner of speaking, and for lack of kinder words... yes... lol

Never hurts to do so, unless it's been so long that your gasket breaks during diss assembly. :D

Bump. Thanks!

I stumped everyone, so I'll try again, its the round guy in the middle with a vacuum hose on one end (should have on on the other side too) and two wires coming out of it. WHAT IS THIS THING?

I'm not sure about your other questions but considering the length of the wires, that plug looks like it originally went to the hydrawlic brake pressure switch. If you pull off the plug, turn the key on and check your brake warning light with the terminals open and shorted. See if the light comes on.

Interesting, except that it hooks up to a vacuum line, not a hydraulic line. Could it therefore be some kind of vacuum pressure switch? Looks like I'll just plug it off...

Now for round 2, on the I6 AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l passenger side, what is this thing, it's got two vacuum lines coming out of it

I guess I didn't explain myself as well as I had hoped. What I mean is that make sure those wires are not MEANT to go to the brake hyd switch. I do not see one on you MC. That si why I suggested to check the brake light while disconnecting the plug and shorting the terminals. The vacuum switch the wires are connected to does not look correct to me.

Ah ok. That does make more sense. I do know I have a mechanical brake switch on the pedal, I'll check and see if these do anything or not. Thanks!

Anyone got the scoop on the last picture I posted?

Still trying to figure out what the thing I've pointed at with the arrow it. Anyone have any ideas? I've plugged the vacuum lines coming from it that weren't going anywhere.

Mechanical fuel pump. Did you put an electric fuel pump in?

Distributor Vacuum Control Solenoid
Manifold vac source on firewall side
CTO switch on front side as shown
As CJ suggested, the wires are not for the solenoid as far as I can tell
