1975 Jeep CJ5, 350ci, D30, D44, twin stick transfer case, Muncie trans unsure of which one
Hey everyone, new to the forums and new to the CJ5 's. Owned an XJ back in the day though. I recently bought a 1975 CJ5 and seem to be becoming increasingly overwhelmed with what to do to the Jeep. Little background on the Jeep. It has a SBC 350 in it, Carter AFB competition 625CFM carb, Edelbrock performer intake, has a sticker for a comp cam but who knows, Dana 30 up front, Dana 44 in back. twin stick Transfer Case , unsure of Transmission but was told it was a 4spd muncie. Air lockers in the rear. Jeep is sitting on 33x12.5x15 super swamper tsl boggers and I believe a rough country lift.

Issues I've noticed so far with the jeep is the throttle is very very sticky. Was going to take off the air cleaner and check into the carb and see if anything is sticking but it makes the jeep incredibly difficult to drive seeing as I can't press the accelerator down without a lot of pressure and the spring back is almost non existent. The ride with the boggers is extremely uncomfortable so looking into some other tires.

The overwhelming part I guess is I'm wanting to obviously fix the sticky throttle which I don't know where to go for the right parts, and looking into some performance boost, tune up of the 350, and definitely considering converting to fuel injection and not by piecing together stock parts but an all in one kit. I'm also trying to get all the casting numbers to figure out what exactly is in this jeep since the guy I bought it from didn't know much about it. If you guys have any advice on where to go/what to do I would be much obliged. Thanks everyone.

For that throttle issue I would suggest removing the cable from the carb and start checking from there. Like is it in the carb, or the linkage. Sometimes you have to trace these problems out. You might get a better ride by letting some of the air pressure out of those boggers, to say around 25 p.s.i. since they are not passenger car tires. Welcome to the forum, sometimes just figuring out what you really want to do with your CJ is the hardest part.

Welcome 350Jeep. Along with what Torxhead said, I would read the sticky thread in the CJ General discussion section, with the title, What to do first with your CJ after bringing it home. Or something like that.

On your carb issue, try spraying carb. cleaner at it with it running. Carter AFB carbs are good horsepower makers, but can be problematic off-road in stock form. And after sitting unused for a while. I have an Edelbrock carb. on my CJ. It is a Carter AFB reworked if I remember right. One thing mine does have is an Edelbrock off-road float kit in it. With the SBC 350, why not look for a Rockchester carb, in a junkyard, and try that? They work well off-road in stock form.

I have 36x13.50x15s Irocks, on my Jeep. As Torxhead said, running them lower, so that the whole tread is in contact with the road makes them ride much better. Hope this helps, Vance.

I've been highly considering the EFItech TBI kit. Has anyone had any experience with them? I've been reading up on them and have come across nothing but great reviews and I have watched as many videos as I can about the kit and I'm pretty impressed. Just the price alone is nice.

It's a good way to go given what you already have in your Jeep.

That's what I figured. I don't want to deal with starving/flooding issues down the road while wheeling and I know you can tweak the carb but I'd rather just spend the money on a quality kit and not think twice while out there. I just haven't seen too many people on here with specifically the EFI Tech kit usually the Howell kit or something else.
