Oil for older engines

Oil for older engines
I'm a rock solid believer in Lucas Magnum 15w-40 truck oil with 20% Lucas stabilizer. I have it in EVERYTHING and have for 10 years.

My $0.02.

I swapped to rotella last year on my 4.5 stroked yj and the engine quited down and smoothed out. I am going to do this in the CJ5 I have been working on once I get the last bit of wiring hooked up from doing a new harness.

The rotella definitely worked well for me and is available anywhere I ever looked. We too, have the very high summer temps here in south south Texas.

Thought I'd mention this. Was in AutoZone yesterday and noticed they wee running a sale on some Valvoline motor oils. Normal price $5.99/Qt., my goodness that is expensive, but that's what everybody else is getting. $2.00 off or $3.99. The sale was on for 20w50 which is diesel rated for Zinc content. So the Jeep got an oil/filter change and a nice crisp $10 bill stayed in my bank account.. I'm probably nuts, but the old girl seems to be VERY happy with a tummy full of 20w50.

If you like Valvoline Motor oil this is a deal that's hard to beat.

Napa brand oil is actually valvoline and usually a bit cheaper also.

oil questions will get all kinds of opinions and range all over the map, do the research, there are articles galore about different oils to use for different applications all i will say is that all oils are NOT created equal and must be matched to the application.

i dont mean to cause any guff! but you stated that the oil needs to be matched to the APP. does that mean all 258s should use 15-40w? i'm thinking about making the switch. but i love my Valvoline! it dont have any noises, but i only have about 10k on the motor.

Let me chime in on this. When I used to work for Kraft Foods we made cheese for other brand names as well. The brands that didnt have the Kraft name on them were all lower quality products. For example by lower quality I meant more fillers like powdered milk , oils , and gelitan. This also happened at my current job. Pet food that wasnt up to par for our Alpo brand was sold at Dollar General. I cant say Im 100% sure but I bet other companies are the same including oil producers.

Maybe I'm wrong but I believe it's not necessarily the type of engine you run, generally we are talking about older designed AMC or Willys or the like engines which most all fall in the same category. What really maters is where you run, dusty, cold, hot and how fast your running (RPM). If the great majority of your running is on the interstate you might run a different oil as compared to some one like myself. Sure I an stuck on the interstate, but when I get where I'm going its a slow, dusty, hot driving for a big V8. I believe 20w50 serves my driving conditions well, besides it's heavy enough to have enough zinc to be diesel rated. Honestly, Valvoline or Castrol products have served me well and I see no reason to change. ..... I confess to looking for Rotella, but AutoZone does not carry Shell Oil products (around here) and I could not walk away from saving $2.00 a qt. with no mail in nothin' to bother with.

NOT in NAPA's case.(I use to work for'em)
Most of the oil is "V" and there gold line filters are Wix.
Wix is the best there is....
There is a reason why the 'pros' buy from NAPA-
No commercial BS-Just FACT.

I will be getting my CJ out of the shop Monday after rear main, front main and pan gasket are installed. Its a 73 CJ5 with a AMC 304 and have no idea how many miles are on it ! Would it be a good idea to use the Rotella oil or maybe some suggestions on what would be good ?

What's in it now?
What kind of oil psi do you see(NEVER/EVER trust the Jeep OEM, ele. gauge for this)
How many miles on the Odometer?
NEVER use a Fram oil-filter!
What's the coldest you see? What's the hottest?
I run 20W50 Castrol year round, and we see teens to 110*+.
When was the last time ALL oil and fluids were changed?

Thanks for the inside info on that. Im a huge NAPA fan for parts and ordering here in Pa. I dont use any of the other chain parts stores at all. :chug:

I had Mobil 10-30 high mileage with a fram filter , Oil pressure runs around 30psi, Odometer has 85000 but I dont know how many miles it actually has. Temps here go from mid 30s , 40s and up in the winter to 90s-low 100s in summer. Next on list is the tranny, transfere and front and rea diffs fluids

Geep-Go with the 15W-40 or 20w50 oil. Get a box of Wix oil filters from NAPA.
I have 119+K miles on my engine and need a little thicker oil for sure now.
FWIW: I have only used 20W50 Castrol in my jeep for the last 29+ years.

Thank You ! Wix filters and 15w-40 or 20w-50 oil ! Castrol, Rotella, Valvoline ? Does it make a difference ?

IMO-Not really. Just stick to one maker, so the 'chem-pack' in the oil is always the same. Look at Wal-Mart for cheapest oil prices and buy lots when you find it.

I don't know if sticking with the same brand is as important as it once was. My father used to say, "If you started your car with Pennzoil or Quaker State you had better stick with it. Back before oil commonly came with a detergent additive Pennzoil and Quaker State had a natural detergent that kept your engine clean. The problem was if you used non detergent oil and switched to detergent oil the crud inside the engine would come loose and clog the oil passages. shortly after switching many engines were ruined from lack of oil flow. This isn't so much the case anymore, but when Lumpy-Grits talks about the "Chem-Pack" this is an off shoot from that time and wise advice, even today.

I have seen that rotella makes a 10w-30. Would this be ok to use? I have a rebuilt AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l with maybe 5k on it. My thinking is that the 15w-40 would be thicker and bump up oil pressure higher than needed. So any thoughts on the 10w-30 vs 15w-40.

Why are you worried about a few extra oil psi's.
On a new engine, I would want the extra little bit.
What do I know-I have used 20W50 for 29yrs in my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l .

I looked up oil in my shop manual. Most are acceptable, but above 40d 15w30 and 20w50 are the recomended oils. The 360 runs @65psi on the highway and drops to a frightening 30psi at a hot idle. Frightening, hey we are talking about a nice healthy 30psi.

There is nut'n to worry about hot oil PSI of 30!
I run 20W50 all year. We see teens in the winter and 110+ in summer.
