I have a 1976 CJ7 that a PO put a AMC 360 in it out of a early 70s AMC Hornet.
I am attempting to change the oil pan gasket and when trying to remove the oil pan flange is getting stuck on the passenger side motor mount. I would assume the AMC 304 & 360 are almost the same and cant imagine this was overlooked by AMC engineering. Anyone ever had this issue? Solved this issue? Spent 2 hours pulling and prying and cant figure it out yet.

AMC did just that.

Put a block under the crankshaft pulley, and pull the m'mount.

What are the chances the AMC Engineers were actually just a bunch of guys drinking at a bar?? It seems like they used a crapload of parts from other auto manufacturers and the stuff they did engineer didnt work that well after all!!!
For example, the motor mount in question needs to have 1/4" less metal on one corner and things would be just perfect.....very simple yet was not thought of. I will remove the mount and remachine for ease of pan removal next time.

In my opinion AMC Engineers did a fantastic job, the problem was the bean counters trying to save a failing company.

:agree: 110%!

These are the same 'bean-counters' that put 2-piece axles in the CJ's.

I'm a bit confused, I replaced my 360 oil pan gasket (on vehicle) last spring and had no problems at all removing the pan. From what I recall I dropped the driver side of the pan first then slide it to the driver side slightly and it came out.

It was a little tight near the passenger side mount but no problems.

Wondering about your motor mounts? Can you post a pic of the problem area?

Did you by chance miss a pan bolt?

I can lower the passenger side about 1-1.5" before it hits the mount. I can lower the driver side down about 4-5" but can not move it in any direction to get it wiggled out. I am usually pretty nifty at figuring out situations like this but this build design escapes me. Does anyone know how many of each size bolt there should be? And what size bolts? I removed them all and know have 5-6 different sizes, lengths, threads, head size, washer type, etc. Someone sourced their own selection of bolts for the pan re-install.
