Did some work today with TeamRush. We re-jetted the carb from 48's to 46's and will probably use 44's in Colorado.

We also spent considerable time setting the timing and adjusting the carb using vacuum meters and timing lights. Got it real close but need to check a couple more adjustments.

Do you have the 2100 carb? We are thinking of doing similar jetting on ours. What did you set your timing at? I have heard around 6 degrees of additional advance for high altitude. Unfortunately, when we put in our new HEI distributor last week, it turned out to be defective. Still waiting on the vendor to see what they will do for us.:(

Looks like you have all the bases covered! We should be well on our way to another great trip! I marked our distributor cap like yours, and changed the jets like we discussed.
 
Wow, it's been awhile since I updated this thread. It seems I usually do it in conjunction with work done for the Colorado trip.

I've been collecting parts for my EFI upgrade. Still planning on the Holley Sniper kit with an FI Tech Fuel Commander. So far I have the fuel lines and an Edelbrock Performer intake manifold. As I type this I'm on hold with Holley to get a release date on the Snipers. They keep getting pushed back and if it goes much further I'm going with an FI Tech unit instead. I should do a cam, lifters and some roller rockers while I have things open, but I don't have the time or money. Doing the EFI is all I can manage this year. Still not 100% sure I can swing the trip but time will tell.

Recently I've been spending time fixing one major fuel tank leak and one very minor one. In conjunction with that I have found the wire necessary to get my fuel gauge working and have tested it. I've ordered a couple of ground terminal blocks (one for under hood, one for somewhere in the rear) and a positive block for under the hood.

I have also got 3.54 gears for the front and rear that I hope to have installed before the trip. They aren't totally necessary but they would be nice nonetheless.

While typing this I've spoke with Holley, FI Tech, Jegs and Summit and I might be screwed. :eek:

Holley has pushed back release to September, so the Sniper is out this year. FI Tech has a 4-6 week deliver date with both Jegs and Summit - that puts me at August 2nd on the outside, 10 days before I would leave, but neither will guarantee it. So now I need to figure out Plan C. Sheesh...:confused:
 
Looks like Plan C is to install the intake then add a 4bbl to 2bbl adapter and keep my MC2100, then install an inline electric fuel pump.

Everywhere I read, folks say this cures vapor lock. The pump supplies the max+ fuel pressure at any RPM and where mechanical pumps fail is that if you have vaporization within the line, the mechanical pump pulls the fuel in front of it, but not behind it and once that's burned the engine dies (they also can struggle at idle or just off idle conditions); whereas the electric pump back by the tank is constantly pushing cool fuel through the system.

Carb bowl percolation is another issue for some, and the addition of a higher aluminum intake usually alleviates that as the aluminum dissipates heat quicker.

I don't want to start a religious discussion on vapor lock or fuel pumps, but I have to throw everything at this in the potential absence of an EFI solution before the trip.
 
Sounds like a plan. Glad you have decided that there is a "plan C", and not to just give up. Make sure you have the correct filter orientation.
I have been considering doing the in line electric pump myself. I only experienced the problem you have once, but I don't want to have to constantly worry about it happening again, naturally, at the worst possible time. I also hope to solve my starting problem.
Let me know how the in line pump works out.

Yeah, I'm not much on giving up. I just wasn't going to go to Colorado with the same setup. No way. I should have the pump in and tank up this weekend so I should know something then. I have ordered the carb adaptor as well.
 
Well I plumbed up the tank temporarily (still on floor jack) and ran some jumpers for the fuel gauge and fired it up for the first time with the electric fuel pump. Ran fine. Adding inline fuel pressure gauge tomorrow evening then setting the pressure and then going to check TDC mark to begin resetting the timing and carb. Will also rehang fuel tank.

Today I set my timing. Looks like about 8deg with zero vacuum at 700 rpm works fine. That gave me 18 on the vac gauge and when I added the vac back to the distributor I got about 19-20. Test drive was good. I think I'm getting a bit too much gas at accelerator pump. I'm going to move the linkage to the other spot and drive again this week. No time left today.

This all sounds great. You are making real progress with "plan c"and my better half will happy too. BTW he's in Canada right now on a fly in fishing trip with our youngest son, so he has no cell coverage.
