What engine do you have in this CJ?
OD-Saves wear and tear on the engine by reducing RPM at freeway speeds.
Do you have a tachometer now? If you do, what rpm do you see at 65mph?

AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l is red lined at 4500rpm.
Is your CJ a 5 or a 7?
Please fill out your vehicle profile.
We need to know your R&P ratio, and tire diameter.

There would have been no 'add on' Overdrive for a later model CJ. As posted, there was a Saturn/Warn OD that could be added to the Model 18 Transfer Case . Your 81 CJ5 would have had the Dana 300Transfer Case .
Being your's is an 81, it may have the T-5Transmission , which is a 5 speed manual with 5th gear Overdrive .
AMC put the T-5 's in trying to get the CAFE up on a brick moving through the air.
Generally, an Overdrive is good if you want to run lower axle gearing (high numeric: 4.11, 4.56, 4.88, etc.) but don't want the engine screaming while going down the Interstate at 70 mph.
