Build Thread Project " Un " Limited
I got tired of the Laredo hogging the garage for the most part. Since I farmed out some of the work for it I decided the Limited will get some attention rain or shine.

Get to work slacker!

:notworthy: It must be nice to be able to have the choice of what CJ to put in the garage.:drool::drool:

Here ya go Pete. This should keep you occupied for a few hours.

I've got a TF999 in the shop (two actually) that need a rebuild, and I can't find anyone around here to bench build them, so think I might attempt it myself. Anyhow, replacing that seal should be in there somewhere.... This is for a 727, but almost the same thing as the 999 (think a lot of the rebuild kits cover both trannys)

Its nice if its not a necessity. Having two Cjs battle for the same garage can turn into two half done projects and no money for either pretty quick. Been there done that. :( The Limited will get some work done little by little till my next free weekend Sept 14th. Then the Laredo reclaims the garage for the seal change.

Thanks for that. Im going to convert the SM465 I have in the garage to accept the Dana 300 first. After that I'll maybe I'll attempt some more in depth auto Transmission stuff.

In fact its time to get away from the computer awhile and start cutting away sheetmetal. ;) Right after I pick up the Laredo . Shop just called.

Well like I said its gonna be a little here and there everyday. I went about cutting out the driver side rear wheel well today. Last time I did this I used my sawsall and it was quick but really haphazard. I got a much nicer cut with taking my time and using a jig saw.

It doesnt look like alot but every bit of clearance I can get Im gonna need. Heres the removed sheetmetal. The Tj flare mod really shines in the front , not in the rear.

Hung out with some family members last nite so I missed a day. After work today I spent an hour down in the garage. My new friend is the wire wheel. Instead of cutting more sheetmetal I decided to clean up some rust. Heres the driver side rear frame area a little after I started.

My arms and my drill got a workout tonite. Heres a pic after I got the scale off the frame and worked over the wheelwell a bit. I need to buy a couple cone end sanders and such to finish some tight spots but overall it cleaned up pretty good. I'll be making up some sheetmetal patches for some of the wheelwell areas.

Im getting all this ready so my brother Mark can do the welding for me. It should be fun working on this with him. :) Unfortunately I found some more work for him to do. This rear shackle area on the driver side is a little weak. I could clean it up and make it last the Winter. Not this time around.:chug:

Ive been watching alot of build threads on this site over the years. Alot of things are above my pay grade right now for sure. I have seen alot of guys use Rustoleum rattle cans though. Since I only need about 3 years out of my Cj tub I think I can work with that. :D Im going to use the "Hammered" finish in black on the frame. If that looks good I will be using the same finish on the wheels and boatsides along with other accents but in silver / gray.

Heres where it gets a little crazy. I know the final color will be Silver but right now its blue. I decided to stay with blue. At first when I sprayed this on I had to step back a bit. Till I go with a new tub here is the color choice I made.

it's bright. what shade is it?

I'll have to check when I get home. It was a little brighter than I was looking for but I think it'll grow on me

Johnny the color was called "Brilliant Blue".

Worked some more but dont have time to upload pics. Lets just say carpet in a Cj was the stupidest option ever.

You can get a nice pint job AND the color of your choice by using a Preval sprayer. They come with an aerosol sprayer with a small bottle on the bottom. I've done many small jobs using these sprayers. The glory of it is you can go to your paint store and get any paint you want, any color you want. Just mix and spray. I think the spray quality is far better than a rattle can at a similar price.

Thanks , I will have to keep this in mind cause the plans for the Cj have just taken a big turn. My brother Mark was over tonite and we spent some time looking over everything I have while the welding man was here. It looks like the "steps method" I talked about earlier is going to change.

The Yj tub I was trying to give away will actually be used for this project. Mark is picking up the tub , boatsides , floorpans and some additional sheetmetal on Friday. The Cj tub has some patches already under the roll bar , in the floors and wheelwells and needs more. The Yj tub is in better shape and will be his project now. I am extremely greatful for this one. Not having to worry about the welding changes everything.

That doesnt mean things got easier for me. I'll be balls deep into the frame off now. Its gonna be total tear down time. Everything will be cleaned , primed and painted. Guess I'll be starting after the Holiday weekend. Here goes Something...:chug:

I figured Id show you guys why we came to the conclusion to use th Yj tub instead. Both front floors in the Cj were pop rivet patched over. The Yj tub has the same on the driver side and a hole in the other so its kind of a wash.

The roll bar areas have been patched at all 4 corners on the Cj tub.

The rear floor and wheelwells also had patches and holes needing attention.

This will also bring me back in line with this post from January. The tub wont be a hack job , but will be boatsided. I think that in itself will decide the way Im going with the front fenders. The angle of the bottom of the tub will push me to do some tube fenders. Did I mention Im thankful my brother can weld? :D

That leads us up today. Here she is sittin in the driveway till I get off my butt and situate the garage. Shes not perfect by any means but I think I have a pretty solid foundation to build on.

Im going to try and use as much of the "Limited " parts as I can to pay tribute to its factory origin. The Limited was probably one of the most "cushy" Cjs ever made. This one isnt cut out for an original restoration. The Northeast climate has taken its toll on it. My goal is to blend the heritage of this Cj with the true off road prowess it deserves. No hacking of the body or rattle can paint for this one. I hope you all enjoy it as much as I know I will.

I can't believe they put those %^&* Torx headed bolts back in there! I only kept one for reference on size, the others met their maker across the fence...:D

Just keep taking it apart Pete, you will have it scattered out like feeding chickens in no time.:chug:

I know , right? Once you have them out what the hell would make you put them back. :bang: I have some pics of the Yj tub so I figured Id share them as well. It needs some work but it is in better shape than the Cjs tub.

The rocker rust above is the worst spot. It will need some sheetmetal even after the boatside mod. The other side wont require anything extra.
