1983 CJ7 : I am trying to remove the old existing rear main engine oil seal. That is proving difficult. The seal in the removable (bearing) cap was easily replaced, but the other (upper and hidden half) won't budge. Following procedures found watching You Tube videos, I have used a flat ended punch to try to push the seal around the crankshaft, hoping to remove it at the other side using pliers. Will not move. Any suggestions?

Solution
Grab it with plyers. Then turn the crank by hand while pulling on the seal (same direction) the crank will pull the seal out for you as it turns. Use this same trick while installing the new one except you will be pushing not pulling.

Great idea! I had to leave the Jeep alone for a couple of weeks while I'm at my business in Michigan, but I will report back when I successfully remove it using this technique!

Thanks for your help!

Another idea, loosen all of the Main Bearing caps. You do Not have to remove them. It will let the Crankshaft "Hang" enough to get it out. Re-install the new one, then retorque all the Bearing Caps

There was a real slick, step by step that someone posted over a decade ago with great photographs, he also went into great detail about placement of the RTV sealant that we have to be careful with otherwise leaks will return. I think I still have this tutorial on my PC at home if you need further information.

I'll check on my PC at home tonight. I'm on furlough from work so I'll have time.

Which method did you use

Yours!

Your method was successful, but I was ready to move to the others if it hadn't been!

It took about 7 or 8 revolutions of the crankshaft.
