Roll cage add on

Have you thought about a bar across the dash? I think it would add stability to the roll cage and help preventing it from folding in on itself during a roll.

The kit came with one but I decided not to use it.

Do you have full ability to use the e brake, and can you EASILY let the windshield down?

I really like to let the windshield down when on the ranch, hunting, or just on a trail.

Sorry for the delay I missed seeing this.
yes park brake is fully functional but takes a better aim of the toe than without the bar.
I have not lowered the windsheild but had that in mind when doing the work and don't think it would slow you down any.

Dan, I used the flat floor plates the kit came with and bolted only to the floor. The rear of the stock bar is tub mounted and did not see any reason to go to the frame with the front.

Tying into the frame with a full cage might be a bit of overkill, but it depends of course on how you drive it. I watched a guy do a complete endo once and his cage was mounted to the body. The CJ5 was totaled, The cage held up and the driver was fine. Another time I saw a CJ5 after an endo in the dunes and the cage did bend but only where it was drilled for an antenna cable. That cage also was bolted to the body. On mine the e-brake is in its original location, with the cage add on kit it is not really a problem, even with hiking boots. It is a bit tighter though, but not really a problem. I remember before I got the cage kit and driving with the windshield down having to duck down to avoid low hanging tree branches, with the front bar, its no problem.

Now that I think of it, the two center bars require a critical placement. If they are placed too far apart there will be issues with top installation and too close together you can bang your head on a bumpy trail. This is where roll cage padding comes in. I still feel safer with that overhead protection.

Made a few provisions to clear my melon during side impact. Set in the seat and make some measurements to see how much room you really need. Padding is great but I would prefer to not rely on it. I do have some, just not in this picture.

An IO original.

found a local dirt track car builder that will sell and bend tubing reasonably and the rest is history. I do not plan on doing a get off with it and its main purpose is to help me hoist myself into the seat. I still refer to it as a "sport bar". One day , maybe, a frame mounted cage but I'm good for now.

The dash mounts were made by a guy I found over at Pirate 4x4, works out of his garage.

IMO if you want a sports bar, than mounting to the body is ok, I guess.
A roll bar that you think might save your life someday should be frame mounted. I also believe the seats should be mounted to the cage. Just my 2 cents.

I like real big T.V.'s in my Sports bar but thats just me. Seriously though this is yet another thing I need to slap in Vickis Laredo . I was going to have something that ties into the current roll bar or a later Yj model. I would have it tied to the frame but hadnt really thought about tying the seats in. This Cj sees kids hopping in and out of the back seat and I dont like losing the flip forward motion of the stock seat just yet.


We can take this to another thread if the OP feels we should.
