Sensor on Trans and Plugs in T/C

Cleaning everything up and I see 2 plugs on the Transmission . One on the rear with 2 wires which I am sure is the switch for the reverse lamps. There is another single wire connected on the top of the transmission which the other end is not connected to anything. Any idea what it is for and where it needs to go?


Also found these 2 plastic plugs on the t/c. Should these have pipe plugs or something in them? Haven't removed them but will be taking it to steam clean everything this weekend and don't want fill it with water.

The two wire unit is for the reverse lights. I don't really see any type of sensor connected to that wire on the top of the Transmission , it could be just a ground wire of some sort. Looking at that Transfer Case linkage reminds me what an improvement it is to have a twin stick. I don't recall anything on those plastic plugs though, it has been quite a while since I stuck mine back in.

Could be a ground, the wire hooks to a sensor that just has a threaded post on it and the wire connector slides on. Didn't have any other wires at the firewall that were not connected, electrically, everything was working so I guess I wont worry about that one.

After cleaning up around the plastic plugs so i wouldn't drop dirt into the t/c, I pulled one out. It is a threaded hole where I can see the shift rods.


Looking at a few different exploded views of the Dana 20 (hoping that is what I have) it looks like there should be springs and balls in the holes where the plastic plugs are although the drawing looks backwards, it shows the poppet balls sitting on the spring and the spring against the shift rods. Wouldn't you want that reversed? Is it ok to run without those and just plug it? Or should I seek out the correct parts to go back in? It seems to shift fine (at least as good as the linkage allows) the way it is.

I would love to have a twin stick and have mentioned it to the other half, didn't get a hell no, just a no, guess that means there is room to negotiate!

The Dana 300 has the same plugs, I ditched them and threaded metal plugs in them. The holes are access points for the springs and check balls when assembling the T case Oh also on the spring/ check ball issue the check balls ride on the bottom of the shift rails and the spring is under the ball down inside the housing the schematic just makes it look different you would drop the spring in the hole and check ball on top and push them down with a punch through the holes and slide the shifter rod over them

Colo Dean,
FIY, the 2 plugs on the Transfer Case , are like gert said , also were used by FSJ`s as "2WD, N, 4H & 4L" lights that were mounted under the dash in a fancy 4 light set. The single wire on Transmission should be a neutral ground for the neutral light, remove and shift thru gears to check. Use the screw in metal plugs like gert said for a better seal with the sealer of your choice.

Thanks Gargoyle, will try to trace this down with the wiring diagram. As it sits, there is nothing connected where the wire comes up to the firewall.

Goes to vacuum solenoid, thru a 3 wire connector from FB back-up fuse.
