t90 tranny freezing up

I just moved to boston from texas and since it has started to go below freezing my tranny has been stiff when shifting. It will be hard to shift for about half a mile then it works fine. This morning it was in the low 20's and it was hard getting moving at all slmost like the e brake is on, then after a half mile it was fine. I changed all the fluids about 2 years ago going by the haynes manual, do I need gear oil for a cold climate? Any ideas?

You probably have water in your Transmission /tfr case. Same thing happened to me. Even after a fluid change, mine is still froze up solid. I'm in the midst of a rebuild, so I'm probably going to pull it apart anyway.

You might change it again and see what it looks like. Especially if you have stored it outside with no top. Water gets in through the boot on the gear shift.

I use 50w in my T-18 and it works as it should in 20* weather. Being from texas I'm thinking you may have used 85-140, too thick for the northeast.

Dump the lube and add straight 50w or 80w-90.

Thanks for the input. I think I will try both ideas, draining the tranny and putting in a thinner oil. But moving back to texas is not an option at this time.

Use a synthetic oil..............much more tolerant in extreme climates...

One suggestion. Run it to warm it up well before dumping the oil/grease. Good point about synthetic oil.

I am going to try doing it on sunday.we have some weather rolling in. Thanks for the tip about synthetic, ill give it a try. Ill post next week ank let ya'll know how it goes.

I just finished the fluid change and it was a bit more of an adventure than I thought it would be. I called it quits for the night and did not take it for a drive yet. Do the Transfer Case and tranny share the same oil, are they interally connectef?
