Tail pipe

Good morning ,Does anyone know if I can buy a tailpipe that exits behind the rear wheel or is this better left to a muffler shop.

I would have the shop make it.
Have them use the heaviness walled tubing they have.

If you go to a NAPA or Vato Zone or Advance Auto, whatever, the tailpipe you're going to order is going to be a rear exit, because that's the way it came from AMC. You could buy one of those, it would be simple enough to cut it and buy either a 45°, 60° or 90° elbow and have it come out right behind the wheel.

You could use band clamps like this

Doing it yourself will be a lot cheaper than taking it to a muffler shop

I would say exhaust shop the job will be perfect and look cleaner, and if you only need a small section replaced i wouldn't imagine the job being more the $75, maybe cheaper... I had a custom catback single out/w a flowmaster,stainless tip, tucked super high, done for $250 and i thought that was cheap!

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying run out a get an exhaust system, just spit-ballin' :drool:... Plus im not a huge fan of clamps.. but they are cheaper.

Thank you everyone for your help. My father bought this Jeep for my oldest brother to drive when he got his license in 1978 (I was in 6th grade).Went through my middle brother and then to me in 1985 and I've had it ever since. Now my son is 16 and he wants it bad. He is doing most of the work himself, including the team rush upgrade ,brakes ,changing all gear oils and now he is replacing the cat ,muffler and tail pipe.( The muffler was free through a lifetime warranty from 1992). I'll post a picture when he gets it all back together . Although it not going to be his daily driver ,I hope he has as much fun as I did in it.

I'm a little late to the party on this thread but I will say this - regardless of who does it the work, I strongly suggest a 45 degree down and 45 degree out that dumps exhaust directly behind rear wheel.

CJ's are known for pulling exhaust fumes / smells back in the passenger area. This setup allows the rear wheel to draft the exhaust and swirl it around the wheel well where it's mixed with inbound air and diluted. No smell this way.

Wow. Thanks for that. While doing my frame swap, I had to modify the way the exhaust was run on my Scrambler since the 20 gallon tank I decided to install negated the way the exhaust was run. I made it dump behind the wheel at a 45* angle to look as stock as possible. Glad to know the reason. When I had the full top on before, I used to get fumes into the truck. Hated that.
