Build Thread The '80 FrankenJeep frame off reassembly
My wife reminded me tonight that once it's deemed roadworthy we should have a coming out party......

Super job ! Glad you got it running. You will get it dailed in soon enough.

Ok - got the brakes functional - spongy, but functional. Gonna hit those this week and see if I can't get em good an solid. Still have a turn signal issue - they don't work. I think the passenger side parking light is dead - hazards blink both rear and driver side front. But no signal lights, front or rear. Got all the leaks stopped but the radiator drain. Just can't find the sweet spot. It's a very slow drip - lost maybe a teaspoon overnight - but I'll get it. Also need to get a timing light on it and see what I have it set at. Runs better than yesterday, but still has a miss, and running rich at idle. But it did idle fairly stable. Time for a test ride. Chocked a wheel, started it up, but it wouldn't go into 1st, 2nd, or reverse. Clutch wasn't disengaging completely...... added some more push, fixed it right up. And here we go.....

On the turn signals. The double filament light bulbs (what my 80 CJ5 came with) cover all the functions. The small filament is for the tail lights. The large filament covers brakes light, turn and hazard. If the brake light comes on in that bulb, the bulb is good and in my experience with old pickups, the issue would be in the turn signal switch in the steering column.

The factory steering column was sourced by AMC from GM. To get to the switch, there's a metal locking plate under the steering wheel that's spring loaded and held in place by a spring clip around the shaft. They made a special tool for removing this plate that like most special tools was expensive for what it was. So, I made my own to get at it. Basically a u-shaped piece of about 1/8" thick flat metal with a hole centered in the bottom to fit over the shaft. The upper parts of the u went down to contact the plate.

Once in place, I'd use the steering wheel nut to provide down pressure on the spring and free up the spring clip which I'd pry loose with a screwdriver. It doesn't have to push it down that much. Remove the tool and it all comes out easy and there's your turn signal switch for easy replacement. I have done it with just screwdrivers, but that's a good way to spill your blood and develop a hatred of all things mechanical.

That PITA plate doubled as a lock for the steering wheel when parked with the key off and to prevent someone from just pulling the wheel and having easy access to the innards to make off with your vehicle. Most thieves aren't that industrious.

sounds and looks pretty good ! You didn't go through the garage door so the brakes must be pretty good also. Great job getting it back together

Thanks - I appreciate it. Brakes are still spongey, but good enough for a run thru the neighborhood.
