Build Thread The '80 FrankenJeep frame off reassembly
Today went a little better than yesterday, but still no fire up. Did get all the essential wiring buttoned up, along with the dimmer switch. No leaks from yesterday, so went ahead with the brakes. Got the master cylinder mounted, added brake fluid, put the cap on till I could bleed em, and stopped and had a samidge (which is a sandwich eaten with dirty hands). Went back to the brakes...... reservoirs were both low - here we go.... brake line connections at the proportioning valve were oozing. They were nice and tight. This was my payback for going the flexible lines. The connections the shop used worked fine at the M/C, but sucked at the other end. They even had the M/C and a proportioning valve for fitting selection. The jousting over functional lines begins tomorrow. I got darked on, so the addition of power steering fluid and coolant will wait till Thurs.

On the bright side - got the ground wires for the sending unit and rear lights hooked up.

Went back to the shop that made the flexible brake lines..... took the lines and a proportioning valve. Told them both lines leaked at the valve, and that the hard line fittings were too big. He looked at the valve and said the hard lines were fine, but the connection "cones" in the valve were worn and too small. We discussed it a bit, and he finally said "I dunno, Bud - I don't know what to tell you." Told him I needed 3/16 hard line fittings, and he said the only ones he could order were what he used. When I told him I couldn't use em like they made em and wanted my money back, I expected a fight. They refunded me, so off to Advance Auto I go. In ten minutes I walked out with this

Bout an hour with the tubing bender and I had this

I have one connection with a very slow ooze.... I should be able to sort that out tomorrow. Other than that, brake lines are done. Topped of the power steering pump, then it was time for anti-freeze. Poured about a quart in, looked under the front end - all dry. Added a half gallon - still dry WooHoo. Added another gallon..... seemed like I heard water running. More of a dribbling. Nothing under the radiator. Topped off the radiator, man I know that's water. Looked under the Jeep behind the front wheel. BINGO! Green kool-aid running off the back of the motor - WTF.? Loose intake? Did I take a freeze plug out? LMAO - forgot to stick the temp sender in the intake. Tapping into my Ninja skills, I swiftly covered the hole with my thumb.

Nice - now I'm channeling the little Dutch boy, with my thumb in the dam...... intake. Looked around to see what I could plug the hole with - and of course I can't reach ANYTHING. Finally scrounged up a plastic bug, sorta plugged the hole, drained the radiator a bit, and so I'll be off to grab a temp sender in the am. Get that buttoned up, time for some ethanol - free fuel and it'll be time to attempt a crank up..

Sweettttt can’t wait

Just curious, did the turn signals on that side work as well?

Ya know, I don't recall. Soon as I get the coolant fountain on the intake plugged, and the weepy brake line fixed, I'm gonna try to blow it up. Once I get it back to life, I'll revisit the lights. I gotta have some noise first.....

LMAO. Hose with nozzle. Be ready to hosem down. :). Treat it like a turkey fryer. Move it out of the garage just in case

I picked up a fluid pump at Advance ($8). Screws right on the oil bottle, has different length tubes to fit quart or gallon bottles... easy...

Pumpkins, Tansfer Case, Tranny...

I'm thinking having a couple of those around would be handy....... fluid specific, so to speak.

Well, still no fire...... wrestled with the stupid brake bleeding most of the day. No joy yet. I would really like to get the brakes functional, cause I know when I get a good idle going on, I'm taking a victory lap or two around the neighborhood.

On the bright side, I was able to get a few more smaller things done between frustration breaks. I the fuel filler bezel mounted

Got the shift levers in place in preparation for the impending victory lap (and just sayin - taking pics of black shift levers with a black background in a garage doesn't work very well...)

In working with the weepy brake line connection, I realized in my haste I hooked the proportioning valve up backwards. Figured that would be a good enough reason to open the drippy junction...... swapped the lines, and it now appears the weeping has stopped. Fingers are crossed.

On to the coolant issue. Hit up three parts stores looking for a temp sender that is NOT a switch, no one could help. Now that everything is tracked my application make and model, you can't just ask for a 3/8 NPT sender - they look at you like you have three eyeballs. So, I sat in the NAPA parking lot and searched for em, found a part number, went back in and the guy said "hey, you found one"........ I swear sometimes it's hard to be humble..... I gotta figure out a way for someone else to do my job for me while I get paid. Anyway, got back to the house, stuck the sender in the intake, it snugged up quite nicely, without the adapter that was there originally, so I started looking for the connector. Looked around, didn't see anything - not a single wire needing a good home. Wondered if I even had one (at my age memory cells have a MUCH shorter shelf life that this project has taken). I couldn't remember if it was wired or not when I tore it down. Ok, no sweat - poked around in the bulkhead connector, and viola! A purple w/tr wire....... so there is a wire for the sender, just gotta figure out where it is. Every couple inches I'd look in the main loom, and there it was - then, right behind the air cleaner, no more purple wire. Backing up, I was expecting to see the cut end, but no - there it goes taking a hard left out of the main loom and heading forward.......... now I'm thinkin since it's on the wrong side, I'll have to splice in an extension cause it's gonna be too short. But I gotta find the dang connector. THERE it is, stuck on a temp sending unit............ Son of a biscuit dang mother blippin......... is already had the thing hooked up. Don't know what was in the other threaded port, but I don't need it. Then while standing there feeling stupid, again, i figured I'd just leave it as a fancy plug. By the time I drove back to NAPA, returned it, drove to the hardware store for a plug, I'd just stay home and endeavor to persevere. (Sorry - quote from of my favorite movies). Now that the brake line doesn't ooze, the drain petcock on the radiator has assumed the responsibility. Still looking for the sweet spot. If I can get that to stop, it'll be the first CJ I've ever owned that nothing dripped. Wait - I haven't put fuel in it yet....... that's gonna be in a couple hours. Then I'll make the nothing dripping comment. Yeah, I know - I've completely jinxed it now.

On a side note - even though my tub says "JOOP", the lettering helps distract attention from that. I'm diggin the lettering - had a guy cut em for me a couple years ago...

If I would just quit wastin time on stupid stuff....... who needs a dual temp sender setup??? Redundancy is a good thing but can be taken a bit too far.

LMAO.... Well, the fat lady didn't sing today, but she drove by the house and waved.....

Ok - let's discuss the stupid, then hit the good stuff...... I was determined to get the brakes bled today. An older gentleman that walks by a couple times a day stopped and asked if was ready to drive it - said yep, soon as I get the brakes bled, but they're kicking my butt. He showed back in about a half hour with a brake bleeding vacuum pump WOOHOO. Said he didn't have the jar anymore, so I rigged one up, hit all four corners, all juice, but the pedal still went to the floor...... WTH?? Checked to see if the piston was even hittin the back of the pads up front. HAHAHAHAHA...... It wasn't.... on either side...... for good reason. NO PADS!!! An image of Homer Simpson popped into my head. Geez. Put the pads in, now I have pedal - not the best ever, but a pedal.

Now

Threw 5 gallons of fuel in the tank (by the way - gasoline pouring into a brand new tank sounds like it's running out on the floor...), looked everything over under the hood, and figured what the heck. It was at about this moment I remembered when I rebuilt the carburetor, I paid no attention to the mixture screws..... I just put it back where the instructions said....... hopped in, hit the starter, and got this

https://youtu.be/sVXM6ICowSw

Had a heck of a time getting it to run...... loping, stalling, occasional burp back thru the carb. Twisted the distributor a bit, it smoothed out a fair amount, and the throttle sped way the hell up. Come to find out, the throttle cable was a bit short. Don't know why as it was the same carb, throttle cable, gas pedal, and cable bracket. So I slotted the mounting holes. Now it idles, bit is still sounds a bit like a tractor. If the weather clears up, I'm gonna try on Monday to get the timing and fuel settings dialed in. But finally, after 4 years, or more, SHE LIVES!!!

I was looking around like I'd lost something because the high heat paint on the headers had not been cured - it was smoking pretty good, and I thought I had set something on fire.....LOL. The power steering pump is a bit too tight, but that's an easy fix. Was gonna take it down the street and back, but the clutch didn't disengage- pedal felt like it should, but I'll mess with the linkage tomorrow afternoon. Now, time for a milestone beverage.... :chug:

Dude that’s so awesome congratulations
