Hey folks,

First post, but love the forum and use it all the time. Looking for some help on a leaking Transmission .

Here's where I'm at: Just replaced the clutch and Transmission (T-5 ) on an 86 CJ7 . Had to separate the tranny from the Transfer Case . There's no gasket between the two. I installed the units separately; Transmission first, then Transfer Case .

Once it was all together and both units filled, the Transmission leaks from between the mating surfaces of the Transmission and Transfer Case - it leaks a lot! I thought at first I may have overfilled the tranny and it was bleeding off the excess. There is a machined groove at the 7:30 position on the mating surface of the Transmission where the fluid is coming from.

Pretty sure this isn't normal and it appears the rear adapter/housing seal is leaking.

Since the tranny and Transfer Case don't share fluid, would it be possible to seal the mating surface and groove with RTV? Or, how hard is it to replace the adapter/housing seal with the tranny in the vehicle?

I've had the Transfer Case out a couple of times now thinking I did something wrong, but all looks fine.

Thanks for your help in advance and please ask any questions to help clarify.

is the fluid coming from the Transmission or the TC?? It would seen that a seal on one of the shafts in not sealing. I don't know enough to bet lunch on an opinion on a T-5 but I don't think there should be fluid/lube between the two parts at all. sealing the joint would not be the best way to do this. Did you build the Transmission ?

Fluid is definitely coming from the Transmission . I put Dexron II atf in it so I could see the color. If I drive it around the block it leaks about 1/2 cup out. I bought it rebuilt from Herm the Overdrive Guy. TC is stock, but is sealed up tight and not leaking.

Have you talked to Herm the OD guy about this??:D

Ended up being the rear seal in the Transmission . Appears it wasn't changed during the rebuild, and/or was the wrong one. The inner diameter was way too big for the input shaft of the TC, causing all the fluid to come right out.

Got lucky and found a seal, and after three times in less than a week I'm pretty good at removing a Dana 300 from a Jeep.

Shot Herm the OD guy an email telling him. Just hate to see the same thing happen to someone else.

It's not too bad a job if you can get the Transfer Case out. I did it myself without a jack two times, and then had some help the last time.

The seal is at the rear of the tranny. There is a special tool to get it out, but I used a screwdriver. Make sure you don't mare up the surfaces or the new one will leak.

Place the new seal in position and use a large socket and hammer to tap it into place until it seats. Again, be careful not to damage the surface or it will leak.

Bolt it all back up, fill with fluid, and drive.

You should hear a suction sound when you put the 300 back in place as the seal and tc output shaft mate.

Good luck and hope this helps.
