What did you do to or with your CJ today?
:) okay, talk about that last picture.

The oil on the floor is from my pinion seal - when I installed my new diff cover a filled it, started leaking - needs a new pinion seal.

The mud line is from a deep hole at the bottom of a new section of Dragons Tail that we got a preview run of. That's where the yeti poop like pile of goo sitting on my bumper came from :)

Got word today from my HOA that said, "You have to get that Jeep out of your Driveway." Since I've been close to it being a driver as soon as I got home I finished up a few odds and ends slapped the wheels on, grease/oiled up the differential, fired her up and drove "that Jeep" around some. One of the things I did was drop in a set of 3.31 gears. Yeah I know. But this jeep will be spending some serious drive time on Interstate 10. This thing is like a brand new vehicle to me. it doesn't feel like it needs another gear. Where it ran at 2,800 rpm's @ 65 mph, now it loafs along @ 2,400 rpm's, this is exactly what I was looking for. Unfortunately, the speedometer is almost useless now. It's almost 15 mph off where it used to be 6 mph off.

All in all I'm pleased.

HH-The error in your speedo also goes to the odometer.
How hard is it to change the speedo drive gear in that model 20 t'case of yours?

I drove my CJ to work today. At my desk I realized I'd left my phone in the center console.

I walked out to retrieve it and a couple of construction workers were looking at the under side from the front.

I asked, "May I help you gentlemen?"

"You parked here a last week," one said.

"Yup. Why?"

"It doesn't leak," said his buddy.

"Uh, yeah. Why?" said I with a smile.

"Just never seen one without an oil slick under it. Nice rig."

"Thanks," I said; got my phone and left with a "Have a good one." "You too" exchange.

No one told me my CJ would be such a conversation piece.

jdcaples - Yep, that's half the fun of owning a CJ.

Lumpy - For my speed and distances driven I rely on my GPS. The odometer is a problem. I'm checking on several solutions:

- GPS speedometer. Very expensive and how does it work in a tunnel/forest/canyon

- Mechanical speedometer, specifically the Auto Meter unit (but can include the stock unit) with the addition of a gear driven compensator, just called a speedo place $200 for the compensator.

- A programmable speedometer. Similar to the GPS unit. To get it to work a divice need to be added to turn the speedometer cable turns into pulses.

Been driving the old girl to work. People think I'm crazy to drive it in 105* temps, but I love it just that much.

I'd like to know that as well. I almost pulled the trigger on a Speed Hut unit, but how it worked in GPS dead zones... I needed to research that.

Most, if not all of Auto-Meter is China made these dayz-

jdcaples - I contacted Speed Hut about the GPS loosing it's signal and this is what they wrote:

"Yes, the Speed hut GPS speedometer uses an 'active' antenna which is much more powerful than the small 'passive' antennas that are used in GPS handheld devises. We have found that our GPS does exceptionally well in all driving environments including tall buildings and canyons. Rain or Snow should not impact the GPS signal as well. The only time you will experience a signal loss is while driving in tunnels or in parking garages in most cases."

Now that's big news (sarcasm), the signal actually is lost on occasion. You'd think with their fancy electronicalness they could hook up the mechanical cable and run off from that for a while.

Lumpy - So, what isn't made in China these days? I do know this about the China manufacturing environment, the quality of the merchandise is directly related to the parent or contracting company's willingness to REQUIRE a quality product. For instance, I'm very familiar with the musical instruments coming out of China today. Particularly banjos, mandolins and guitars. Granted some are :dung:, but a surprising number of them are EXCELLENT.

I've got some Auto Meter gauges and they flat out work. You might know this one, which gauges are made in the USA or the rest of the world for that matter. Seriously, I'd like to know.

I got the same response from Speed Hut. Working for a hardware/software manufacturer, I know what kind of job descriptions author such information. I just haven't managed to look for product reviews by people that use the gear because it's way too easy to not spend hundreds of dollars.

I know for fact, that tall buildings and such, in the city will block GPS.
They also block my sat. phone--
IMO-Look at what it takes to re-gear the speedO drive in your 20.
Sweat once-cry once and you done FOREVER.

I pulled off the doors and rolled the sides and back of my top up to give it that safari look. Worked on removing my sway bar, and one of my daughters buffed out my dash.

Worked on making sure there was a very positive ground to the fuel sending unit (Didn't help), put shrink tubing on the hand throttle cable and backed off the advance to 8*.

Finally got the CJ on the road after a little over a year. Decided my son needed to learn to drive it since it is going to be his. Had a lot of laughs teaching him to drive it since he's never driven a stick before. Still have a little more to do to it before its done, but it's almost there!20150624_124710_zpsbatgosrf.png

Sounds like the beginning of some good memories. :chug:

Finally got my cranky Transmission pan to stop leaking. Only 2 more leaks left. :D

Finished my tummy tuck. Could have used a 240 stick to weld those joints but I think I'll be okay with what I got out of my 140.
