What did you do to or with your CJ today?
Spent the day installing a new valve cover gasket on my AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . Everything went smoothly except for that damn bolt right up against the firewall. :bang: Had to feel my way around back there, and probably spent more time on that single bolt then the entire project. Oh Well!
 
Looked at it...

Thought about getting the new battery and welding the beat up (and off) driverside muffler back on. Casulty of last Rubicon Trip. :rolleyes:

Thinking of going to play in the snow soon...

I feel your pain. I'm changing that gasket while my engine is out. Hate that bolt.
 
Washed off all the old grease on Dana 30 wheel parts prep. to paint and reinstall with all new hardware. The PO was a mudder; even had dried liquid mud behind the instrument panel. That's the good news; the bad news is that the last guy to work the wheel bearings left off the axle tube seals, and the axle tubes are filled with enough adobe to build a hacienda! Good Grief!
 
A little more progress today. I got that %#^*+ seal out of the Transmission . What finally worked was heat. After heating up one side, I was able to pry it away from the wall and it popped right out.

Then installed the new seal with the help of pvc and a hammer. Went straight in on the second attempt. Woot.

The. i reinstalled the Transfer Case , which required removing the tranny crossmember. It made it easier, but for those who helped me move the engine, they remember what a pain it was lining up the bolts that hold the tranny to the crossmember. But I got it done alone with the use of the motorcycle jack and my regular floor jack. I also reinstalled the rear driveshaft. I will get the front one installed when it is warm enough to open the garage door. Dang. It is bitterly cold today (18*).

Looks like it shaping up! I decided not to do anything on mine today since it was -2 deg outside and about 12 in the garage when I woke up!

Thanks. And yeah, I was not going to open the garage door. Which would be needed in order to move stuff around to do the front driveshaft. I also want to take the rear bumper off of the old frame, but it is too cold outside.

The guys at the mall seem to really like wheels like that ...... hey ... hey ... Michael stop it, those are very nice looking rims on a very decent looking CJ5 with all the right stuff like lockers, winch, lights way up high, low gears in the Transfer Case and fuel injected V8. ...... now back to the post ...... nice, very nice! ..... Border collies are very cool too.
 
yeah, the wheels are nice. But it's the 33" tires on 10 wide rims she now wears that has me excited. In the pass 7 or 8 months I've gone through the axles putting lower gears in the diffs and changed out the driveshafts for heaver ones, body lift, ect. and now its coming together. :D Now if the snow will just melt...

I saw your discussion the other day about light bars and such. Up high works for me because most of the time the CJ's on the farm and when I'm working on the baler at night or checking on the cows it nice to have a bright light up high so I can see what I'm working on without blocking the light. Besides the windshield with the lights fold down if needed.:)
 
I noticed the real working farm behind the pick-up and the scratches on the striping. There was a big part of me that thought your light bar was actually there for a good reason. I've used high lights like that to help set up camp and skin coyotes/deer and other critters. The only real negative I can come up with is for trail use where nice expensive light units get destroyed. I first noticed this in the '80's. Guys would put big lights up top, they looked nice. A few weeks later you'd see 1/2 the lights pointing towards the sky with the bar all tweaked sideways. I thought from then on. nope that's not for me. I will also say this, the new low profile lights like you have probably are far better than the old KC's were. Admittedly the rims are fancier than my taste enjoys, but that is just me and I know it, The tires look great though. I've been a 31x10.5 guy for years, but 33's definitely turn my head and make me want to reconsider. My CJ is tall enough to handle 33's too. I was having fun, but not really making fun. You do have al the goodies that most of want on our CJ's and I'm always a sucker for a CJ5 of any type.
 
Well I'm a liar liar pants on fire type guy ...... I did take the CJ out fully intending on getting some supplies, that is after going to the dump. Unfortunately while doing just that I broke my CJ, no really I seriously broke the differential housing. We are talking holes for oil/grease to leak out. ..... I hate this, damn it all.

How did you do that? Rock crawling at the dump? What did you hit it on?
 
If I have a big rock in front of me that I big enough to crawl over, Ill back up and find another way. No, I haven't pulled the cover yet, but something popped inside the case. The gear was used from a Jeep junk yard up in Phoenix. It went in well, shimmed right up, had a very nice pattern, never made noise when it was running. I don't know and won't until I pull the cover off it.
 
Well that's a genuine bummer, Mr. Hog.
I hope you find a replacement quickly and conveniently.
 
I've got an axle all lined up, with another set of gears. I'm hoping that the guts aren't all chewed up. That E-locker was a pricey bit of technology.
