It was beautiful weather today so I didn't need much coaxing by my teen age daughter to take a ride in the jeep so we went riding and then lunch and on the way home stop at HD and bought 4 large bags of charcoal (almost 80lbs.) because it was on sale.

I think I'll mount a big tv on the wall in front of the Jeep and watch first person YouTube Jeep videos - with a fan blowing in my face..... and make race sounds......

Rolled the CJ out of the barn a few days ago and this past weekend, tore into this years repairs/maintenance. Dropped the oil pan to reduce the amount of "territory marking" by changing the rear main seal. Pan is off, seal came this morning, will change it tomorrow. Also dropped the Transfer Case for the same reason, new seals and gaskets. I decided to scrape off all the grease and dirt before starting pulling things apart. I don't know why this surprised me, but, when I cleaned off the top of the case, there was a weld there. Seemed odd since the area that was welded was not really an area subjected to stress. Then it dawned on me. The PO had installed a Tera Low kit. Was this one of the cases that required grinding to make clearance for the gears? I pulled out the rags that I stuffed into the front of the case to protect it, and yup! I could see the grind marks on the inside of the case. Problem is, the PO ground all the way through! Oh well! It doesn't seem to leak from there but just to make sure, I will clean it up and put in a little JB Weld rather than try to fix the :censored: weld that he did. I don't think that he used ni-rod, so I don't want to blow a hole in it.

Very nice.

Yes it is. It used to have a suction cup thing. But it is old. And now it is screwed to the windshield and it holds the phone up for my music/podcasts/nav.

Hey guys! I'm new to the whole blog thing and this site. I just picked up a 79 CJ5 Renegade with the 304v8 that barely runs but runs now till I shut it off. I found a used 97' 360 with an auto Transmission for $250. I want to swap the 360 into the jeep and sell the auto Transmission . I know the mounts work but I need to know what I need to do to convert the 360 to run a carb as well as mate up to the factory 4spd. Also any electrical changes if need be. I do not know yet what 4spd is in the jeep but will find out a soon as I can get under it. A parts list wld be nice but any info will help. Thanx!

Welcome,

You may want to start a thread in the tech section
Your 4 speed is not stock although it could be a swapped in T-18
I'm not sure your 97 360 mounts would work
If your bell is AMC I'm guessing your 360 will not work but I'm not a dodge guy.
Going from FI to carb, why?

Unfortunately your plan will be more expensive than you want it to be, the 97 engine is a Dodge motor which has a different bolt pattern on everything than your AMC 304 and the Dodge 360 rarely came with a manual Transmission which makes it harder to source a flywheel, it is a superior engine it has a hydraulic roller cam and multi port fuel injection if you choose to go that way

AMC 304 is a good size for a CJ. When you say barely runs, are you sure it's not a tune up and timing / filters / vacuum hoses kind of rough running situation instead of a worn out engine kind of issue?

I'd start with trying to get that AMC 304 tested out to see what is really wrong with it before a engine swap. If you did, and still wanted more power or something, you could move forward from there with the easier 360 swap which would be a AMC 360, or get more difficult with other choices from there...
