What did you do to or with your CJ today?
At least you will have the knowledge that your jeep is good for a long time.
To me that is worth a lot knowing exactly what you have. Good luck and have fun on the rebuild.

Well - on the bright side you'll have a great freshly rebuilt AMC 304 on the CO trip... I'll be jealous! May pick your brain a bit about what you use and parts etc.

If you 're feeling up to it, would be a great addition to the tech section if you take some photos as you go. Not if it will derail you at all though or screw with your concentration on building ;)

Planning to rebuild my AMC 304 at some point, or a swap 360 if I find one laying around...
:D

:chug:
No problem JR, pick away! I will try to take pics and post on our build thread as we go along. :D

I started with the intention of replacing the rear main seal on a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l years ago. Same scenario. Seal would not come out, and I had to drop the crank to change it. Once I saw what the bearings looked like after 100K, I decided to just rebuild it like I am the AMC 304 .

Not a bad idea to go ahead and rebuild since you already have some of it taken apart. My leak isn't very bad and could have gone away now that I've been driving the jeep. My AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l is pretty new with less than 2k miles on it. It had just been sitting for a while (years) and I think the seal had slightly shrunk.

It sure will be a nice Jeep when you get done

Wife had the van at work so I hitched up the trailer and used the Jeep to take our wagon and the girls to Walk For Literacy this morning.

Once we were there I proceeded to pronounce the word "literacy" wrong the whole time so my 11 year old could practice growling and rolling her eyes at me... ;-)

Nice shiny new metal !

Nice shiny new metal !

lol I was worried that mild steel might not be strong enough for steering until I got the new parts in and realized how incredibly much metal will be in my new steering compared to the factory Dana 30 stuff and for that matter the stock 1/2 ton Dana 44 stuff

So is that the area that you had machined flat? Or some place else

Nope, that's the driver side the right side will be machined exactly light the left, interestingly the left is milled to 80 degrees not 90 degrees and the right is designed to be milled at 80 as well, on top of that the new steering arms are designed to work with my knuckles milled as they are at 80

So the left comes 80 & right comes 90 from the factory? and the right needs to be 80?

The top of Both of my knuckles are at 80 degrees to the spindle, the left is milled and the right is still raw forging, I am going to mill the right to match the left, I have heard to mill knuckles 90 degrees to the spindle. I believe that to be incorrect information, if you mill mine to 90 you will thin out the top of the knuckle, also my steering arms are milled to compensate for the 80 degrees

Got the base pieces for the drivers seat riser fabbed up today. Jeep came with a YJ drivers seat riser, and it was rickety and trashed, so I'm going to build a new riser - and may do the same in the passenger side. Got this far today.....
