Unfortunately your plan will be more expensive than you want it to be, the 97 engine is a Dodge motor which has a different bolt pattern on everything than your AMC 304 and the Dodge 360 rarely came with a manual Transmission which makes it harder to source a flywheel, it is a superior engine it has a hydraulic roller cam and multi port fuel injection if you choose to go that way

Thank you for the info I didn't realize there was a difference in the AMC vs Dodge 360. Everything I had read this far did not specify AMC or Dodge just 360. The only reason I started looking for a 360 was because everyone I know said the AMC 304 wasn't worth rebuilding, that if I was going to rebuild I shld just swap for a 360. Lack of money has always been an issue so when I found this one with an auto Transmission for 250 I thought I cld sell the Transmission and get my 250 back.

AMC 304 is a good size for a CJ. When you say barely runs, are you sure it's not a tune up and timing / filters / vacuum hoses kind of rough running situation instead of a worn out engine kind of issue?

I'd start with trying to get that AMC 304 tested out to see what is really wrong with it before a engine swap. If you did, and still wanted more power or something, you could move forward from there with the easier 360 swap which would be a AMC 360, or get more difficult with other choices from there...

:ww:

Well it cld b. I set the timeing by ear and adjusted the carb and choke to get it to run well enough to drive it a mile to home. I guess I shld put a little more time into the AMC 304 before giving up on it. Do you think I shld still pick up the 360 and Transmission for 250 and resell it? I Dnt know what they r worth so idk if I wld turn a profit or just break even. If I wld just break even its not worth my time.

Welcome,

You may want to start a thread in the tech section
Your 4 speed is not stock although it could be a swapped in T-18
I'm not sure your 97 360 mounts would work
If your bell is AMC I'm guessing your 360 will not work but I'm not a dodge guy.
Going from FI to carb, why?

Only thought to go carb because the engine doesn't have the harness or computer to run it. That and idk :dung: about FI and only know a little about carbs

If money is an issue I would do everything to keep the AMC 304 running, if you want an AMC 360 it is a powerful motor I have one in mine. I was looking for a AMC 304 at the time but could not find one. The AMC 360 is a direct swap for the AMC 304 except for the flywheel, maybe you can find a good running AMC

Damn too bad ur in TX I wld swap you for sure! I havnt been able to find an 360's other than the 97 Dodge 360 I mentioned. $250 for the engine and Transmission seems cheap enough to that I cld flip it for profit but idk really know that. What do u think

Got the shifter off of the Transfer Case but couldn't get the adapter for the new twin stick cable shifter mounted. There is a piece in the way I need to cut off, but my sawzall died. Will pick up a new one soon.

You don't know anything about the dodge 360 or Transmission to (with good conscious) resell it - I'd pass on them since not what you're looking for personally... Now if you were saying the engine was what you wanted and selling off the Transmission like you originally planned, that would be a bit different.

If you want to go through the headache of buying to resell for profit, that's up to you though...

Keep looking into the AMC 304 to see what you can do to keep it going. Those who say not worth the rebuild, may not be thinking about the time, money, and added little things that comes with a engine swap. Now if you did find a good running AMC 360, as stated above, the engine would slide right in and all you would need is to find the right flywheel as these AMC engines are externally balanced on the flywheel I believe... The AMC 304 flywheel would not work on the new doner 360 - so grab the flywheel too...

To go further with this topic though, please make a new post in this section:

as it's general "planning advice" on a future build.

Baby steps. It is still progress. Any forward movement is good.

Yep getting some forward progress is great, I have the knuckles ready to come off so I can machine them for high steer

BAAAMMMM speaking of high steer, I just ordered my kit minus the DOM tubing which I will get locally........... so ready to do some machining =)

Big thanks to Bill D for packing up my 5 with all the goodies that came with it and seeing to it the CJ was properly loaded up for the ride home.

Bill is one strong dude, he manhandled an sm420, 8247 warn winch full of cable, 2 piece bellhousing, axle shafts, 1/8" plate enough the box the frame, tube step bars, a few brake M/C, and a few boxes of Jeep stuff.

Many Alaskan Ales for you!
Thanks so much Bill!

Got around to the rear main seal. The Sneaky Pete upper seal remover did not work. I tried to slightly drop the crank shaft to remove the seal, but the seal is just too hard to allow it to slide out. Noticed that the rear main bearing is scored. So, what started out to be a simple seal change has now resulted in the engine mounted to an engine stand with the heads and intake now sitting on the bench awaiting a complete engine rebuild! :(

That escalated quickly.. my I6 is leaking from the rear main seal. I hope
I don't have a similar issue!

Got 4 new tires put on the CJ7 , today! Went with Micky Ts, mtz p3, 35 x 12.5 x 15s. The drive home was noticeably much better than the old Iroks would do. Will see in the next couple of days how they work off road. Also, bought a nice older 8' Six- Pac cab over camper. Had been looking for one for years that was light, hard sided, and that would fit in the pickup bed with the tailgate closed. Now I will keep looking for a nice car hauler trailer to pull behind my truck and camper, that will haul my Jeep.

I started with the intention of replacing the rear main seal on a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l years ago. Same scenario. Seal would not come out, and I had to drop the crank to change it. Once I saw what the bearings looked like after 100K, I decided to just rebuild it like I am the AMC 304 .

Well - on the bright side you'll have a great freshly rebuilt AMC 304 on the CO trip... I'll be jealous! May pick your brain a bit about what you use and parts etc.

If you 're feeling up to it, would be a great addition to the tech section if you take some photos as you go. Not if it will derail you at all though or screw with your concentration on building ;)

Planning to rebuild my AMC 304 at some point, or a swap 360 if I find one laying around...
:D
