Mocked up my "new to me" power steering setup for the AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l . There was a J20 at the local pick-a-part a month or so ago. Went to get some parts for my FSJ. Figured most stuff would be gone. But low and behold the J20 power steering box was still there. Had been waiting to do a swap on the CJ and this will be the perfect box. Think I paid $45 for the box, and maybe another $30-40 for the lines and pump. Got a bracket setup locally for $100. Came with a brand new pump and an extra manifold side bracket as well. Got that portion all mocked up tonight. Mocked up the box mounting a couple days ago.
Now I need to figure out what to do about the pitman arm. Guess I can swap mine over from the manual CJ box? May have to get new lines as the bends on the J20 lines run pretty close to the radiator. Although I did move the radiator up to the next set of holes. But now the cap hits the hood. May be able to space the radiator back some and get it to close though. Allow me to use the existing lines.

Nice score! The manual pitman arm won't fit the power box, so you'll need a power steering arm. Not quite apples to apples, but I got a power steering setup for my '77 from an 80 Wagoneer (both V8s) and the lines didn't work. I don't remember if it was length or bends, but I ended up just ordering the correct CJ lines from the parts store.
Fitting ends were the same diameter? Will order up a power steering pitman arm as well. Need to make sure the diameter is the same. The output shaft on the J20 box looks larger than the one on my manual CJ box.

I actually used the Waggy pitman arm (I needed a flat arm for my high steer setup and it had the right taper for the Chevy TRE on my drag link) but the CJ and FSJ (and pretty much every other Saginaw power steering box) use the same out put shaft. The manual steering boxes use a different output shaft, so a different output pitman arm.
As far as the hose fittings, there are 2 standard fittings for Saginaw boxes. I don't remember the sizes, but 1 is an SAE flare fitting and the other is a metric o-ring fitting. If the box is from a 79 or older, then it will have the SAE flare fittings. If it from 1980 or newer, it will have the metric o-ring. I would look at the fittings and see if they are flare or o-ring. Then just get lines (if needed) for the year CJ that used those fittings. If I remember correctly, the return line just slips on both ends (box and pump) with a hose clamp, so you might be able to make that one work and just get a new length of hose.
I got the wife to help me bleed the brakes enough that I could move it in the garage back and forth under it’s own power hopefully I will be able to finish the brakes tomorrow

Nice to have it motive again, ain’t it?? Do we get to see a video of the maiden voyage??
Have I mentioned lately how much I hate bleeding brakes??

Copied Mike and used a dash bolt location to mount a RAM mount for my phone.
Originally took the bolt in the center out. But I could not get my hand up behind the dash to hold the nut. So went with the next bolt over toward the driver.
Weird... my dash nuts are all welded in. Can you see it through the steering wheel?
spent a little time on the mill adjusting these cage mount brackets to the CJ. the plates are identical on both sides which is more than I can say for the Jeep. All bets are off when it comes to that crappy Kentrol glove box door, I have been a bit upset with that ever sense the latch hole turned out to be 1/2 inch off.
Picked up 30 feet of 1 1/2 " DOM on Saturday. this should be interesting.
the guy I bought it from does dirt track cars and works at a local speed shop "Smileys racing", very cool place with tons and tons of way cool stuff I have no use for. Any way in talking he says he can do bends for less than $10 each, this sounds quite reasonable to me and the tube was just a little over $3 a foot. The plan is for a bolt in addition to the original bar, mostly to help me hoist my self in and out. If things go well, next may be one of those windshield to tailgate tied into the frame projects.
