What did you do to or with your CJ today?
I went jeeping in my CJ and when I stopped on the trial I saw a stream of liquid pouring onto the ground. At first I thought my radiator was boiling over. Then I noticed it was coming from one of my front shocks. I have gas charged shocks and when all the oil was on the ground I heard the gas hiss out.
I have a shackle reversal and let me tell you: I am POed at my PO for putting a SR on my CJ and making the suspension FUBR!
Because of my SR, the front axle moves to the rear as it goes over bumps. Since the shock is mounted behind the front axle the shock smashes into the axle. This has dented and damaged my shock until it sprang a leak.
Today is not a good day to ask me about the fender cutting or the drive shaft mods I had to do because of the SR.
Now I need new shocks. I found that Doetsch makes shocks that have an offset mounting. Like this:
baja-side.webp
That looks like the perfect shock for a SR. I don't know who else they sell those to. I sent an email to Doetsch to make sure I get shocks that will work.

Sorry to hear about the FUBAR Busa, but can I ask for a learning experience for those of us who will be doing a SR, from what you have seen, what is the best way to mount the shocks to avoid dameage/issues?

Sorry you have had bad luck with the SR. I will have to check my shocks for damage tomorrow, but I don't remember seeing any denting from the axle on mine (with SR also).

I took the above picture from the front of my jeep. This is the front right spring getting compressed. As the spring compresses the axle moves to the rear since I have a shackle reversal. The steering knuckle moves back and up causing it to bang into my shock. To remedy this I need to move the bottom of the shock to the rear. Doetsch makes a shock like this:

This picture is upside down. This end will mount at my spring plate. This will move the bottom of the shock to the rear and hopefully avoid getting damaged. You can't move the shock back too far or it will get in the way of the brake caliper when you turn.
We have had this debate before about shackle reversals. Some say it's an improvement but I say otherwise. All the problems I have seen were caused by the axle moving to the rear as the suspension compressed.
I have had to cut my fender, twice I bought custom made long travel drive shafts and now I need special shock absorbers.
As with many mods: one thing leads to another and when it comes to shackle reversals I just don't think they are worth it. Or at least that's my opinion.

Well, we all know what opinions are :D. Seriously though, I appreciate your insight into that. I do still plan to do the SR, but these little tidbits are extremely helpful.

Winter is here and with the temp hovering in single digits I decided to go for the heater motor upgrade. At first I though I would use a motor out of a 98 gmc that I had. After tinkering with that for a few minutes I gave that up. Went to the part store and spent 20 bucks and bought the one for a 73 blazer. great improvement. Its louder but a lot warmer.

its at tranny shop....1st gear sync is toast....had his glass man come and replace windshield ( was goin to do Lexan but heard its illeagal in GA)......while its at shop i went flyfishing for bass.....3lbs

Finally got the CFO to release some funds to go to the toy...

Not pictured is the raw steel for the new dash, and the angled bezels for the gauges.

If it ever warms up here (we are supposed to get our first taste of snow/sleet tonight) then I will get around to installing them. Got to head south to Dallas tomorrow first.

Rebuilt the wiring harness for taillights and rear markers. I started about a foot forward of the back drivers corner of the tum and ran completely new wire for everything excep the sending unit.

Then I got my half soft top installed. Pictures are coming as soo as the rain stops.

Figured if I can drive with half of a top in the rain, I can take a quick photo.

The engine runs like Smashed A:censored:, but it runs and drives under its own power. :D I made it a couple miles down to the gas station for a fill up and back. I'm hoping that most of the issues are due to bad gas and an out-of-tune carb. Either way when I get back from sea there is an ignition upgrade on the way, and more time to give the engine some attention.

LOL. I never heard that one before.:D

A tank or 2 of good gas sometimes makes a big difference.

I just put a set of 33/12.5/15 parnelli jones dirt grips on the CJ7 and those wheel wells are stuffed. Now can figure out how much lift I need for them to look right. From stock tires to these are a huge jump in the right direction.

Well I have been slacking but a couple of weeks ago I was stopped a a red light, and I got rear ended by this lady in here 200? Buick, I had pulled one of my buddies out of a ditch he managed to slide into, and I had my three ball hitch with the hook in, and the hook was facing up as that is how I last used it, well after running into me she threw it into reverse, the hook ripped out her hood latch and the hood went up(it has those struts on it) I asked her if she was ok and she said i backed into her! I replied back that I am calling the sheriff, so the deputy arrives and the lady tells the deputy that I backed into her and she saw my reverse lights. the deputy comes over to take my statement telling me about her claiming to see my reverse lights. We are standing at teh back of my jeep when he brings this up. I am not sure if a 1960 CJ came with reverse lights, but I do not have any on mine. I asked the deputy what reverse lights she thinks she may have seen, and the deputy thought I was getting smart with him, so I asked him again, and ste\ared at the back of my jeep, at which time he looked and then asked me where my reverse lights where. I said it is a 1960 and I do not think it came with any, and there darn sure were not any on it today for that lady to aim for. The deputy asked her if she wanted to change her statement, then his radio went off, her drivers liscence was under suspension, and the other two people at teh gas staion onthe corner came out and told the Deputy that the lady had run into my, by that point she had already sighen the statment. The deputy asked if there was any damage to my jeep, I replied if there is a new paint chip missing I cannot find it. Super tough bumper built by Runk in the 1970's $100+, her car got towed and she got a free ride in the back of the sqaud car. Good Karma, earned on a dayly basis, ride in a cruiser free, The 12 inch hole thru her grill, radiator, and brocken exaust manifold, priceless

That's awesome! I hate dishonest people. She knew causing an accident while suspended would probably mean not getting her license back for a really long time so she tried to screw you to get out of it. I'm glad it bit her in the Arse! :D

A tank or 2 of good gas sometimes makes a big difference.

That was my hope the other day when I went and filled the tank with premium. I had added some seafoam when I filled it and planned to let it idle for a while and let the seafoam do its thing on the carb and engine.

Unfortunately, the next morning I got called home from work to move my jeep out of my garage before the city towed it. Apparently the gas tank has a leak when it's full and had caused my garage to become an explosion hazard. I'll bet the people in that apartment building were a little upset with me. My apartment is in a diffferent building.:D

I was able to siphon about 2/3 of it into gas cans, and was able to put some of it into my truck, but gave away a few gallons because the cans were not mine.:(

I think the leak is at the filler neck where it goes into the body of the tank. Maybe this summer I'll have a chance to take the tank down to get a better look at it and get it fixed or replaced. In the mean time, I ran a wire brush around the base of the filler neck to clean the area up. Then I ran a thick bead of rtv around it to try and seal it well enough to store in a storage room. Hopefully the rest of the stuff in the storage room wont smell like gasoline. I did let it idle for a couple hours to burn up some of the remaining fuel.

This was the last photo I took before I parked it until I get back from sea this summer sometime. IT came out well for a pic from my phone.

Went up and broke some trail!! :chug:

Worked on the gas gauge and tachometer, unsuccessfully on both.
New sending unit is stuck or grounded, after I got the wiring to actually connect it wants to read full with 5 gallons in the tank. I ordered another sending unit, which I will ohm out this time, I figure if I have to drop the tank again I will eliminate any possibility of another problem. Some of us know how much fun it is to drop the tank. Does anyone know what the ohm reading , full and empty, are for a 77 CJ fuel tank sending unit??
And then there was the tachometer, I picked it up used on an E Bay auction and paid more than it was worth. Part of the learning process. I wired it up to the MSD tach adapter as instructed and got nothing, it may have been junk from the get go. Part of the learning process. wired up a little 2 1/16 tach I picked up at HF, on impulse, and wired it to the tach signal on the MSD off road ECM, no tach adaptor, and it worked as well as a harbor freight tachometer should.
so all in all I didn't make anything work but I did find two more things that don't, I guess thats progress.

Here is a chart of all the gauge readings. You'll recognize the source.

If, as most catalogs show, there was much similarity between 76 to 80 CJs, this may help.

Sure would like to know how it comes out. I have to fix the fuel show-nothing gauge on my '80 CJ, along with oil press, temp, tach. Only thing that works is the Ammeter. But it runs great, only wanders the tiniest bit, and goes down any road in South Mississippi, as well as some roads that aren't roads.
