What did you do to or with your CJ today?
So..…to make a really, really long story short, after you paint your dash panel and mount everything back in, admire your job well done, and enjoy a well deserved beer.... make sure the dash panel is grounded. This way you can avoid the cussing, agony, and the neighbor laughing in your face as your tearing everything back apart because the instrument lights no longer work, along with the turn signals and the engine turning over. It can turn into a painful nightmare! :chug:

I hope you didn't let the smoke out of your gas gauge.

I just bought new SuperSwampers TSL SX 36 inch tires.:dbanana:
Don't ask how much they cost.
They are very aggressive. They will work good on rough terrain. As a matter of fact it feels like I am on rough terrain even when I am driving on smooth pavement. But that's okay, my jeep is for off-roading not a DD. They will be much louder on the highway although I haven't left town yet.
They are Bias-Ply and I consider that a must for any tire that you are more concerned with off-roading than highway use. the sidewall is as tough as the tread. And that brings me to the reason I am replacing my tires with half the tread left. I used to have radial BFG Mud Terrain. Those were some excellent tires but two years ago while I was jeeping over a very rocky trail I got a sidewall gash that wrecked the tire. BFG has changed the tread of the Mud Terrain and I couldn't get another tire of the same. I tried CraigsList and eBay but ended up getting a low cost brand instead. and then another. I went through 3 tires in one year. It was always sidewall gashes that wrecked my tires.
So then I gave up getting another BFG to match the rest of the tires. I decided to get 5 new good off-roading tires. I decided on Bias Ply SupperSwampers. When I went to make my purchase I found out I couldn't buy any Bias Ply SuperSwampers in my size. Interco (the makers of SuperSwampers) closed a plant. The economy has hurt them more than other tire manufactures. People still needed tires to get to work but they were cutting back on tires for their toys.
I waited ONE YEAR for them to start making the SuperSwampers I needed. Now I have them. Well not exactly. These 36 inch tires are a little bigger than I was hoping for. But I am done waiting and at least I now have 5 matching tires.

I started replacing the exhaust/intake manifold gasket. the exhaust leaks and the carbon monoxide finds its way into the cockpit somehow.
I saw an article on replacing the manifold on a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l /4.0 and the mechanic replaced the bolts with studs, this seemed to me a stroke of genius and sure enough it beats the heck out of holding the manifold up and putting bolts in the head.

As I took the intake and exhaust apart I discovered that the exhaust was cracked and repaired.
the strange thing is that I did not do it, My Jeep is a one owner (me). I did replace the intake with the 2 BBL and may have replaced the exhaust with the intake as a unit. That was about 1987 as I recall. I am wondering if this is something the factory may have been capable of. It occurs to me that this may be where the exhaust bilge is coming from.

anyway I decided to use an aluminum intake , water and electric heated and the old exhaust manifold from the J-10, replaced that with a header on a 4.0 head. The PITA happens when I notice the studs I have won't work with the other manifolds. The PITA part is the studs, "stress proof alloy steel" are about $2 each or $25 for the set give or take a buck or two.
So I recommend the studs, it looks like they will make things noticeably easier, but make sure you get the right length the first time.:D

Nothing is ever as easy as it first looks.

Cool, a '77 CJ5 with one owner.
Odd about the exhaust crack.
The studs are a great idea. I have heard of it but never tried it on the manifold.
Good luck IO. I know your jeep is in good hands.

its looking like the Jeep is holding together better than my memory.:D:rolleyes:

well i managed to take a senior skip day and spend most of the day piddling around with the ole cj. I finally modified my cup-holders to hold my cb radio steadily.
And also managed to take the slack out of the tilt steering column.

I declined buying back my first CJ5 , a 79 with I6 and decided to focus on my 57 instead. Bad move? yes and no. Maybe I'll actually finish a project though, that would be nice

I had a cheep Mr. Gasket fuel pressure regulator and did not feel that the dial diaphragm was doing its job so I bucked up and ordered a Holley regulator. Stuck her on today and im thinking this was a few bucks well spent.

Put on a set H shackles all the way around and it made a huge improvement.
You can drive down the road let loose the wheel and it holds the road.Let off the gas or shift gears it dont want to change lanes. All I can say is $160 well spent:chug:

were the old bushings in sad shape? did the shackles come with new bushings?

Old bushings were bad but not shot. All it had for shackles was home made steel strips.
I got the shackles with greasable bolts from Wisner Machine shop (out of somewhere in MI.)all 4 sets for $110.Got new bushings from Morris for $54.
Had to cut the edges down on the bushings to fit right but Like I said WOW

Put in all new gauges. all mechanical, of course. need to find a new speedometer. still have to put on the turn signal switch and tail lights!!!!!

I cussed the manufacturer of the throwout bearing that was new when I built the Jeep last summer as I was pulling my tranny back out today. When I bought my barely started jeep project, it came with a new clutch kit but the junk partially plastic throwout bearing came apart yesterday and chewed the heck out of my T-18 front bearing retainer. I bought a new National throwout bearing this afternoon before pulling the tranny and discovering the damage to the retainer. If I can't find a new retainer in town tomorrow, my CJ will be down for a few days.

I got sent home from work today because the electric went out
(not much to do in a machine shop with no electric) so I decided to change out my tac. I had a Nordskog digital tac., but the leds kept going out one at a time till there wasn't much left to read. I got an Auto Meter a month or so ago, so with time on my hands decided it was time to change them out. I never realy have time to look at it in the woods and I have a rev. limiter, so a small one works for me.

I looked at my out of commision CJ on the way out of the house this morning and wished that the ebay seller's claim that "shipping usually only takes 2-3 days anywhere in the U.S." was true.

I can't do anything until my new bearing retainer arrives, and I'm a little nervous about what if they ship the wrong part?
