I am a bit biased, but if the 8 is in decent shape, that would be the one I would choose. But it depends on what you are looking to do with the Jeep of course. Good luck deciding.

- 76 cj 7 originally a 304 auto, when I bought it.It now has 258 and a 4 speed....Dana 30,AMC 20 , Dana 300...2004 F-350..2005 Fatboy
Removed all ducts from under the dash,switched lockouts ,made an adapter plate for late model jeep upper duct to fit 76 cj. installed taller front shock mounts, replaced turn signal cancelling cam and still messing with my gear swap.

Don't let these guys get to you Atwood. This is a CJ crowd. I remember the '80s when they stopped making the CJ and came out with the YJ. It was made to be safer than the CJ. It sat lower and was better on road. Like all the cars from the '80s they were inferior to the cars of other decades. The YJ got rectangular headlights because car makers thought rectangular headlights were cool (they were so wrong). The off road crowd didn't like the YJs because, even though they were better on road they were worse off road. And the rectangular headlights were criticized for just trying to follow current trends. A lot of people changed the hood, fenders and grill from YJ to CJ.
It took years but people realized that the YJ may have been better for the road, it could be easily modified for excellent offroading. YJ's were cheep (and still are) but there are now a lot of modified YJ's that are great off-road.
Here's an easy way to remember the different jeeps:
CJ = Civilian Jeep
YJ = Why buy that Jeep
TJ = With the turn signals out on the fenders that jeep looks like a T
JK = Now that the jeeps are once again excellent off road when stock, you can call this one the Jeep King.
