t14, v6 oddfire, stock. Late 60' cj5 (no title so haven't verified yet) late 40's Willy's jeep cab. Dana 44 rear and 30's front. 4.88 gears. Drum brakes. No power steering. Don't know much else yet. Haven't tore into it too much.
Well, I've been talking with some really nice guys here today about my CJ5 project and getting my axles etc set up. I decided to fire up the oddfire v6 today and check it out before I go to far. Put in a makeshift gas tank and filter and it started right up! sounded great for a pair of seconds, then I noticed a tick that turned into a light almost knocking sound. It hasnt been run for a few years, but the engine oil was at the correct level etc. It didn't even get a chance to heat up much. Once the oil got warmed a little is when it became noticeable. I took a long skinny funnel and turned it backwards and put the small end to my ear and listened around (trying not to hit the fan). I got underneath and it got louder. Put it to the oil pan and bingo. So....what next? Are there parts available for these? Is it worth fixing? Should I find an inline 6 donor vehicle and swap it in? hmmm. what do you think?

what's a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l inline that has a recent overhaul and aftermarket Offenhauser intake and 4bbl holley? How hard is it to put in place of my v6? He has all the brackets etc too. it is currently running in his jeep.

guy
you are now getting out of your range
first, you have a short nosed Jeep, it will take a lot of money and fabbing to get a strait six or a v8 in there
second, the 225 V6 in your jeep is one of the most desired engines in a jeep.

you are jumping around with this jeep so fast and far I think you are not aware of what you are doing.

calm down
make a plan
stick to it
you have started a lot of threads because you basically have no plan

the amount of money you are about to spend to fix up this jeep in the manner you are going about it will go way past 15 grand. That engine replacement will mean not just an engine, but adapters, mounts, crossmembers, new skid plates, new drive shafts, possibly a tcase and tranny change, and you already want to change the front axle, maybe a new rear axle

I agree with BE. CJs with original type drive trains are becoming the rarity.

Understood. Just posted a short book on my other post if you get bored.... I am going to look into the availability of parts for the Dauntless Buick 225 V6 . It is a pretty cool engine. I still cant figure out how they made it fire like it does. But, I am going to buy the 30 axle with disc for up front, but the chasis without a powerplant is a yard ornament. So I better get started on the Dauntless Buick 225 V6 . Any help on the rebuild?

they make entire rebuild kits for that engine still, it is very popular

the engine is a buick 305 with 2 cylinders missing, the reason it fires like it does is because they kept the stock crankshaft journel pattern from the 305

it is also the secret to the engine, it has a 50 pound flywheel, developes a ton of tourque on the low end and fits perfectly into the short nose of the Early CJ5 .

Find a machine shop you can trust, and listen to their recommendations. They should also be able to get you the correct rebuild kit. I have got so use to my machine shop, I can plastic gauge one rod and one main then assemble with confidence that tolerances are correct. 225s are simple, no smoke or mirrors. With a slight compression bump and a mild camshaft, very good power can be had. Good luck and have fun.

Rebuild what you have, as said.

FYI...Anytime you change or alter a system on your CJ it will have a most likely unforseen effect on other systems. By far easier to rebuild/repair than to remodel. There will be things that should be altered for safety like the brake system and there are things that need to be left alone.
I recomend you find yourself the factory service manual-SM-1046 and start reading.
If going to a model 30 front is it 4.88 gearable? If not read above "FYI" because if not the you will be regearing the rear too.$$$

If you look online you can find many parts and a lot of completed engine rebuilding kits fo that engine. I have a 66 CJ5 with the 225 that is going to need a rebuild sometime in the near future so I have looked around and the parts are out there. Good Luck and make a plan first.

Did you ever find out what the noise was on your 225? I had the very same noise after I had obtained a little heat in the motor after start up. It was my timing chain smacking my timing cover. Pull your oil pan and see if you have any nylon teeth in your pan or any shavings in your pick up screen. These motors had a kylon gear in the timing set to make a little more quiet. Worth a look. I know I did the same thing as you and thought lower end myself.
