84 CJ7 V8 swap

I do not post a lot on forums! I have done a quite a bit of mods to many Jeeps I have owned and many buddies rigs.
This is the first time I have done a V8 swap using a AMC V8.

I thought many that are considering this swap might want to know this info. It is things that I have not seen before.

You will here lots of people say that AMC I6 to a AMC V8 is a bolt in swap.
You will also here that the drivers side motor mount is the same.

I have my 13th open tubed Jeep vehicle. A 1984 CJ7 .
Factory (and hurting) AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l /258.

These statements are not completely correct.

The fact is, you could use both motor mounts if you drill them out. The Drivers side mount does not have the holes drilled for the V8 mount.
I also used 1974 CJ5 factory motor mounts and the frame bolt pattern is slightly different.

This bracket needs to be cut off the firewall. It is a heat guard for the I6.

In addition. the Transmission needs to come ahead about tow inches. This was not an issue for me. My T177 (yes T177) had an additional bolt pattern that allowed me to move it forward on the belly pan without modifications.

Oh, and I said T177 because a lot of CJ's that were produced with the 2.72 diff gearing actually came with the lower first gear T177 and not the T-176 .

Jeep is back up and running. A few bugs to work out.
I had been planning a engine swap for a while now. I came across a 360 from a Waggy that had recently been pulled out of a 74 CJ5 . I acquired all the mounts, brackets, flywheel and complete engine for 300.
I took a risk on the engine and figured the mounts and flywheel was worth the price alone.
I have 500 into all the parts to put this together.

Be prepared to have to modify some brackets or parts. Or get ALL the parts from a prior CJ and not a Waggy.
You can not use the stock exhaust from a Waggy in a CJ. Without some serious work and mods. So you just about have to use headers. I prefer side escape because of the heat produced. And it is easy to fab up exhaust.

Nice to see others swapping in AMC V8's....no replacement for displacement

Interesting about the frame mounts, I remember when I got mine, the one in question looked suspiciously similar in dimension to the I6 mount.

I also remember having to swap the fuel line over to the drivers side. Now that I run propane however, that's a non-issue.

My 401 came out of a J-truck and had the stock dog-leg exhaust manifolds thankfully, so I was able to avoid having to track something down.

Because my CJ originally had a I4, it did not have a heat shield. Not sure it ever needed one...when I put a AMC 258 i6 / 4.2l in there, I never had an issue with anything catching fire. The 401 puts out a ton of heat though
