Hey guys,

I have a little bit of a problem and was hoping to get everyones input. I have a 1986 CJ7 with a rebuilt AMC 360 in it. The car has 160,000 on the clock and about 30-40K on the motor.

The jeep runs great, most of the time :), but Ive been having issues with high levels of oil consumption. There are no apparent leaks and no smoke coming out. For instance since my last oil change I have driven a couple of hundred miles maybe and had to refill an entire quart.

Oil pump, timing cover are all brand spanking new pretty much and in terms of pressure I see a healthy 60+ PSI at start and around 15 at hot idle. At load im getting around 10 PSI per 1000 RPM.

Currently im running straight 40 oil, a little heavy for my taste, but I'm still curious to find out where all my oil is going.

Any input would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

I've just been through the exact same issues with my 360. I have no idea of the mileage on my engine though but it was originally in a 70's Wagoneer. I started with valve stem seals. That helped but not fully. I have now changed oils and filter and I'm running 20w50 ( was using 15w40) and I'm using a 50/50 mix of oil and Lucas oil stabiliser. I have disconnected the PCV valve from the carb and pluged the carb hole. (this is just a trial). By doing this I have gone from using 1 litre/100kms to using nothing. I have also gained about 10 psi on average across the rpm range but biggest change is at idle. I just have to be a little carefull on cold startup to not over rev it until the engine is warm.

This is what happened to me also. If you did not the stock metal valley pan cover and opted for conventional intake gaskets, oil will get sucked up the PCV valve and burned off. I re-routed the PCV valve to the air cleaner and put a small cone shaped filter from Advanced Auto Parts on the oil tube fill cap and problem went away.

Well,

turns out motor is close to toast 😢... Several tests have been performed and did not bring up very comforting results including things such as compression being **** in 4 cylinders. Carburetor seems to be also shot.. Engine is being stripped and sent to the machine shop for a rebuild, top to bottom 😃..

Funny thing is although she wasn't running great she still drove like a tank although being in pretty bad shape..

I have had nothing but problems with that engine since I bought the car a few years ago. It has been rebuilt before and for all I know it wasn't done right. At least this way I know it'll last (hopefully 😁)

Now I also have the great pleasure of buying a new carburetor, my god what a mind blowing experience, there are simply to many...
