best ignition system - 20 years of first hand use
Really good one I had was the Accel 300+ racing ignition and matching coil. Lasted roughly 15'ish years. No longer made.
Burned through THREE msd 6a and 6al's in short order. Got tired of replacing them at over $250 a pop. Would go on deployments and come back to a dead Jeep. Oh sir, you are out of warranty now.
Burned through a Mallory Hi-Fire digital box. Lasted around a year. Another $275 down the drain. Repair time found out Mallory was out of business. No parts to be had to fix mine. Had to trash it.
Now running fine with the CJ Duraspark 6cyl distributor (large brass cap). That triggers an old school GM 4 pin HEI module. Can find these at ANY auto parts store in the USA for cheap. Bought the aluminum heatsink for it with thermal paste (Ebay). HEI module goes straight into an old school inductive oil filled coil. Again get parts for cheap at any auto parts store in the USA. NAPA Premium (lifetime) wires and Autolite 985 plugs. Just bump the key and she fires right off. Zero issues so far for the last year and a half.
As you guys can see, got tired of wasting money on an "improved" CDI ignition system. They are great - when they work. Would I buy another, nope.
You can also wire the HEI modules like NASCAR does. Wire in two HEI modules ($25 each) and two coils if you want. Another $20 each for the coils new pricing. For less than half of one MSD, you can have total reliability times two. OR throw an extra HEI module in the glove box.
Haven't noticed any loss in performance either going from CDI to inductive. Couldn't be happier with it. In a blind test, you would never know which type was installed. What are you guys running?
