Really good one I had was the Accel 300+ racing ignition and matching coil. Lasted roughly 15'ish years. No longer made.

Burned through THREE msd 6a and 6al's in short order. Got tired of replacing them at over $250 a pop. Would go on deployments and come back to a dead Jeep. Oh sir, you are out of warranty now.

Burned through a Mallory Hi-Fire digital box. Lasted around a year. Another $275 down the drain. Repair time found out Mallory was out of business. No parts to be had to fix mine. Had to trash it.

Now running fine with the CJ Duraspark 6cyl distributor (large brass cap). That triggers an old school GM 4 pin HEI module. Can find these at ANY auto parts store in the USA for cheap. Bought the aluminum heatsink for it with thermal paste (Ebay). HEI module goes straight into an old school inductive oil filled coil. Again get parts for cheap at any auto parts store in the USA. NAPA Premium (lifetime) wires and Autolite 985 plugs. Just bump the key and she fires right off. Zero issues so far for the last year and a half.

As you guys can see, got tired of wasting money on an "improved" CDI ignition system. They are great - when they work. Would I buy another, nope.

You can also wire the HEI modules like NASCAR does. Wire in two HEI modules ($25 each) and two coils if you want. Another $20 each for the coils new pricing. For less than half of one MSD, you can have total reliability times two. OR throw an extra HEI module in the glove box.

Haven't noticed any loss in performance either going from CDI to inductive. Couldn't be happier with it. In a blind test, you would never know which type was installed. What are you guys running?

MSD 6AL for about 3 years no problem and running great

Been run'n a MSD setup will coil, for about 20 yrs now. :chug:
Never an issue, and it lowered my emissions a good bit also.
Very pleased. :notworthy:

I'm running a DUI Ignition can't say as I've got a ton of miles on it but it works. A buddy of mine raced using MSD ignition modules, they were so reliable they would wire in two with a drivers switch. When one went bad. and they did, the driver could switch on the fly. Occasionally they wouldn't get through a race due to two blown MSD boxes. They could have been an exception, I don't really know. Its been GM HEI for me.

Sounds like MSD boxes are hit and miss. They were a miss for me several times.

They were great, coming from a stock Jeep ignition lol. When you upgrade the stock mess, I can't tell anything. Well I'm a lot heavier in the wallet now. And the good feeling that it will start rain or shine now with the 4 pin HEI module.

Best I used was a Hays Stinger II conversion unit. Ran it in my BBC jet boat until I sold the boat. Would convert most popular distros into magnetic pulse and could use any coil from stock to hot.

As others have said, it's still hard to beat the HEI units for simplicity and reliability.

Here in Ca, if it does not have a C.A.R.B. certificate. It can't be used on any vehicle that has to pass SMOG testing.
MSD is Ca. SMOG legal.

So Lumpy, are you saying that a GM HEI system is not emission certified in California? Does GM know this? Somehow that doesn't seem logical. At least as far as normal equipment is concerned. Racing and off road equipment would likely be entirely different.

Have no clue if that is Ca, CARB compliant or not.
What I do know, that if you use some aftermarket system like an MSD or such. If it does not have a CARB, E.O. You will fail the visual of the SMOG test.
Just the way it is in a F:censored:g state that hates old cars with carburetors.....
You should know how that is HH. :poke:

Can't say as Arizona hates old cars with the passion that California does. We are relatively emissions easy, but they do have to pass a high flying visual inspection and a tail pipe test. My CJ is stubborn, where it likes to run is not emissions compliant.

Neither does mine-I have to back off the timing a bit for the smog test.
