1961 cj-5 with a V-6 that evidently doesn't belong. I'm trying to identify the engine.
Also a 1961 Corvair Monza.
Hey Guys, I have a 61 CJ5 but the V6 in it doesn't belong. I have tried Google and one of the links I found in this forum but I can't figure it out. Here's the numbers I have and where I got them from:
front of block below the drivers side head = B22441
Top of back of block = 1349430
back of intake (2bbl looks stock) = 8-1861678-8 (or 3?)
I didn't find any on the sides of the block. It has what looks to me like a GM distributor because it has the "window" that you can adjust the points through while it's running (as if). I'm not an expert at this serial number/model number/vin number stuff but I did figure out that it should have a L4-134 engine in it. If it helps the VIN number is 5754B 130365 which tells me it's a universal, open body, left drive, number 0365. I guess all that rust is an aftermarket install because the VIN doesn't mention it as far as I can tell. What ever info I can get would be greatly appreciated.

:)Casting number back of block above Bell Housing #1349430 is a 1961-1963 early 198 cubic inch Buick V-6 Odd Fire motor. This is the early version motor that came out of a Buick car before they went to a 225 Cubic inch motor in late 1963............Bore and stroke between the two motors are obviously different.........
Of course in either late 1965 or early 1966 Willys starting putting the 225 Buick Odd fire V6 motors in the CJ5 as a factory option..........and continued to until 1971 when AMC came onboard...........and the rest is History!

Thanks Tarry99. Now I have something to work with. Do you know if that makes this engine the "Dauntless Buick 225 V6 " or the "Fireball"?:notworthy:

:)For sure not the Dauntless Buick 225 V6 .............I do believe Buick was calling these little 198 motors as they were the early 225 motors "Fireballs" but some say that was really the small V8 that Buick was also building during that same time frame.......
Although some had the fireball decals on the air cleaner which was probably just a factory part that fit both the V6 & V8 motors at the time.........
Thats a question I have heard hashed over many times with no real conclusion. But for sure after 1965 the Buick now owned by Willys 225 V6 was known as the "Dauntless Buick 225 V6 "

I have read in my research that the "oddfire" engine was simply a V-8 without 2 of the cylinders. This is why they weren't like the other V-6's, not set up like a V6 in the internals balancing and such. I just couldn't identify my engine as one of them. Thanks for the help.

:)Well from the outside you would not be able to tell.........it really is the crankshaft that sets that up and it is because in the process of making a V-6 they did in fact use parts off a V8.........the firing cycle as it relates to the crank shaft is what cause's the issue ..........hence the distributor had to have an odd breaker plate...........of course once GM Development decided to build a completely new V6 motor all of those issues went away. For GM this was just a cheap way to get there and try the theory. The GM V6 went on to probably be one of the most popular and most used motors ever.

Now maybe I can get new head gaskets for it and get it to run. It's been sitting up for several years and I have already pulled the plugs and sprayed WD40 into all the cylinders to get ready to hand turn it and make sure it's not frozen up. Thanks for the help.:notworthy:
