Detailed Dana 44 Front Swap?

Detailed Dana 44 Front Swap?
Thanks for the kind words aglinks.
I’ve never outboarded springs so I can’t speak with any first hand experience
I had a rear CJ 44 so it would look pretty goofy outboading the springs.
It only cost me $100 to respline both shafts.
When I tossed a set of 60s under my current CJ I was confronted with the same choice....outboard or cut down, I chose to cut down both the front and rear.
I just don't prefer to have the wheels stick out so far by keeping the full 44 or 60 axle width.
I run with a lot of folks who outboard their springs and that’s fine as well.

Wow! That is a "detailed" procedure! I'll have to save this thread for future reference. Thanks Posi!

I forgot to post the full width kit link

https://davescustomsunlimited.com/jeep-cj-full-width-axle-kit/

I did a lot of research and most full width kits are shackle reversals. They provide a little better ride on the road since the axle swings slightly back upon hitting a bump. The down side is that the jeep will have a tendency to nose dive under hard breaking and theoretically have less traction when climbing a obstacle off road.

PROs: I like how Dave's kit integrates the winch bumper for strength and simplicity. The outboard isn't really noticeable unless you know what your looking for. Wider spring placement gives better body control and was able to remove the sway bar.

CONs: springs are wider so a big tire can hit them while turning if you don't have enough off set. My 37" will rub at full lock.

I used Dave’s unlimited kit. Super strong and kept the schakles in front

His kit comes with a new bumper right? The PO welded the bumper to the frame on my jeep to the point that I dont think it is EVER coming off.

Mine did which was nice since it replaced the bumper and separate winch plate with one solid unit. He also offers a kit with out bumper.

I know that this is an older thread but I have scout axles that I am planning on using and have a question about the caster. I found a website that offers caster correctors. Up to a 3 degree difference per side. Anyone use these and what has the experience been. Here is a link to what I am talking about.

1.5* degrees is no where near enough. You need to be 6-7* range. Best route is to cut/turn the knuckles, preferably after you have the axle under the jeep for good measurements.

Revisiting this thread as I once again consider upgrading axles. None of the images load now which sucks. Does anyone have a CJ on Narrow Track Waggy axles? I am curious to see how goofy it might look since they are wider than the CJ axles.

I've got a 44 housing out of a Gladiator that was narrowed to wide track width...inner knuckles replaced and set to 6-7 degrees caster

Just taking up space at the moment...needs a new home

With inners, too...just needs stubs

Which ones? I think I can repair them...

Im right in the middle of collecting parts for a grand wagoneer rear Dana 44 that is 58 inches wide and a wagoneer front axle that has been cut down to 60 wide.

I’m using ‘75 Wagoneer axles for my Laredo and ‘78’s for my Renegade .

These are all passenger offset and 59”-60” and I’m leaving them that way.

Unfortunately photosucket locked all my photos and I'm not willing to pay their ransom fee because of the manner in which they went about it.

I may have the photos on my home computer if folks are looking for certain ones. I've cut down both 44s and 60s.

My current 81 CJ7 has a cut down 78 J10 front axle you can find pics in the Rubicon picture thread (Tan with red duffel bag on top). The rear is a postal "van" 44, not the narrower postal dispatcher 44.
